Kin and Kind and Other Blood - Adaar I
(on AO3)
“So you’re saying you’re not a woman, but you’re also not a man?” Jonquil Adaar said, looking at her child with her brow furrowed.
“That’s right,” they -- Ashaban was the new name they’d chosen -- said. Ashaban straightened their spine. “I know this isn’t easy, mother, but it’s who I am.”
“It’s not easy,” Jonquil said, a shit-eating grin spreading across her face, “but it’s damned brilliant.”
“What?” Ashaban clearly hadn’t been expecting that response.
“The Qun,” Jonquil said, “teaches strict roles for women and men. The Ariqun would have a fit if they heard of a Qunari who refused both roles.”
“Well, I suppose that’s a good thing,” said Ashaban. “It certainly can’t hurt. Glad to make you happy every now and then, Mother.”
“Even when you don’t make me happy, Ashaban, you always make me proud.”
