ph00t's Favorites 6/23 - 7/8
Our staff member ph00tbag (AKA Sonic Rainboom) wanted to give a shout out to these special tracks. So many we will make this into a 2 parter.
Wubbaducky - Reformed
Wubbaducky is a fairly new face to the music community, and I'm already really impressed with their stuff. I really like the way Wubbaducky contrasts highly atmospheric segments with sharp cuts in pitch and tone, here. There's also a really cool thematic juxtaposition of Discord with samples from The Great Dictator with Charlie Chaplin.
Renard (TQBF) & Aoshi - Wanderlust Redux
Aoshi always does something really special with his production. In this case, I really like how the beat, unlike what is common for Hip-Hop, takes a back seat to the texture of the guitar. This borrows heavily from Wanderlust, by Renard. But it does so in a way that you almost can't tell if you aren't paying close attention.
Strik9 - Nightmare
I usually find dubstep that appealing, but when something is this unabashedly wrathful and dark, I have trouble not appreciating what it's doing. There are no uplifting interludes. There is no seminally upbeat section. This tune is an onslaught of rabid barks and feral growls, interspersed between hopelessly dark sampling. Strik9 strikes again.
Steven, A.D. (feat. AshenFlash) - Summer is Here
For the minimalism of this tune, it's still incredibly fun. I really quite love the solos in the intro and outro as well. The repeating two chord background allows the vocals to take center stage, and you can meditate on their meaning, which is something I tend to forget about with music. Summer is Here won't let that happen.
Guthey - The Celestial Nights
Guthey demonstrates quite an ear for texturing, here. The pad design in this one is delicious, and all of the sounds blend from one to the other seamlessly, giving the tune a great cohesiveness, despite having several distinct sections. The kick drums are cool, and in the context of the art, evoke the slow steps of the Ursa as she plods through the forest.
Les Chevaux Sans Têtes - Les Chevaux Sans Têtes
I had literally never placed French and Metal in the same thought before hearing this. I guess it should have crossed my mind as at least a possible combination of two concepts, but Le Chevaux Sans Têtes had to beat it into me. And I'm glad they did. The mucisianship and vocal skill in this tune is apparent. It's too bad I don't know French--all I can figure out is it's about the Headless Horse.
Visions of the Poet - Friends until the End
The drums in the intro to this are so epic. Right from the moment they kick in, you know you're in for a ride unlike any other. I'm also a fan of the trombones in the C-section, which provides a nice lull in the action, while still maintaining the tune's high energy, before the main theme knocks me right back over again.ening.
Do you prefer Cerulean or Indigo as a color?

I think that its somewhere along the lines of reincarnation until you achieve a nirvana of sorts and move onto the next plane of existence
