The Charles Playhouse has an interesting history. Asher Benjamin was the architect in 1839 for the Fifth Universalist Church. Boston's first Synagogue was here by the 1860s and after they moved out it became a speakeasy and nightclub with Duke Ellington and Count Basie often in house. By the 1950s a theatre group started here that included Al Pacino and Jane Alexander. Currently Shear Madness and the Blue Man Group are in place.
