Kipo!

This post contains light sub-plot spoilers for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts!

On this blog I plan on recommending a lot of Queer and Trans media! The first thing I'd like to recommend is a cartoon not a lot of people know about, It's a Netflix show called 'Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts', although the lead is not canonically LGBTQ+ one of the main characters, Benson, is.

Benson actually has a coming out scene where the main character, Kipo, tells him she likes him, he simply says he's gay, but he likes her a lot as a friend. Kipo does not make a big deal out of it and simply says she appreciates him a lot, and apologizes for misreading his signals. This was such a simple coming out scene but it meant a lot to me, even though I identify as neptunic (person attracted to nonon-men basically), because this teenage boy was simply able to say he was gay, and it wasn't a big deal.

A bit later in the show, he gets a boyfriend, Troy. Him and Troy are shown as a completely normal couple, Benson's crush is shown as just a normal teenage crush, their relationship is referred to normally, Troy's Father approves and even helps Troy ask Benson to an event. They're very normally shown as boyfriends who go on dates and find each other just simply awesome.

This representation might not seem like a lot to some folks and that's completely understandable, but to me it's very special, because as I said before. Being queer and having a boyfriend when you're a boy is just shown as a normal thing, there's no homophobia or weird comments, they're just a normal couple who have fun together. Queer people have been denied that for so long, in fact before Queer people reclaimed the word Queer we were called it because Queer meant odd. Queer relationships are often either fetishized or shown as weird, unatural, gross, etc. But in this show a boy has a boyfriend he likes, they don't encounter big dramatic relationship problems, it's just normal.

Although Benson was the reason I made this post, I'd like to take a brief moment to mention 'Asher' who is a side character with not many lines, but they are canonically non-binary. The reason I don't talk about this much is that there transness is never mentioned, they're rarely mentioned, but I still think it's great that there is a canonically transgender character.
