what are your issues with fist of the northstar exactly?
Mostly culminates around Rei’s story arc, characterization, and Yuda’s really tasteless presentation. There’s just a lot of misogyny throughout that portion of the story particularly, often through Rei himself. I wouldn’t necessarily have an enormous problem with a major character being like that were it not for the fact that this is just accepted and he never really reaches a point of improving past that behavior. He only begins to show any ounce of respect for Mamiya after falling in love with her. It’s not a charming character flaw, it just makes for some uncomfortable scenes that slight his image.
Yuda is pretty self explanatory, but isn’t an issue that’s best for a cis guy to give a breakdown on so I’m better off leaving that for others to talk about.
There’s other lesser examples of these things later on in the story, like the only female martial artist to show up in the entire series framed entirely with pity and still being promptly killed by Kenshiro without much hesitance, but I think the prior example is the most significant negative mark on the story. It’s a disappointing byproduct of Buronson’s unabashed traditionalism that while provides much compelling content can often bog it down with less than stellar examples.
