Manga Rec: Bread & Butter
The series follows Yuzuki a woman who recently quit her job as a teacher due to a combination of burn out and a student harassing her. Unsure what to do she tries match making to find a husband but her matches are failures. She finds comfort in an odd stationary shop that also sells bread, while there she connects with the owner Youchi and absentmindedly asks if heād like to get married. After a moment he agrees and the series follows these two as they bake bread and learn more about each other, as well as exploring the fragile relationships of others.Ā Ā
This series is currently my favorite romance story just in general. And that comes from its uniqueness.Ā
- The Main characters are 34 & 39, while 39 isnt uncommon for a male love interest but even most josei cut off the female leads age at 30. Now i might be biased as Iām turning 30 this year but its really nice to see a story about a woman restarting her life and falling in love when sheās 34 an age where so many people say sheās past the age to do such thing, and the same goes for Youchi as being a baker is a new thing for him as well and heās coming off the break up with a longtime girlfriend.Ā
- Its a very passive love. While the summary may make it sound like a whirlwind romance its not, the pair have this very easy going and relaxed nature around them thats just really refreshing. A lot of the issues the pair have stem from how they each lived full lives separately and donāt know much about each others past. Though in the same breath they note the people they use to be would never have connected like now. They just take it all one day at a time and are in no rush to marry.Ā
- It uses itās gimmick that being explaining how to bake breads as a means to talk about the difficulties of life and connecting with others. And how important human connections are.Ā
- The series has a very relatable view on jobs and even relationships, talking about how if you work the same job for nearly a decade it might no longer fulfill you the way it did at its start, how small things gone unaddressed will pile up in a relationship and ruin it, that you canāt just expect someone to understand you and that itās ok to be unsure how long things will last.Ā
- The romance is very sexless (as an ace gal this is rather refreshing) there are many romance series where it feels like the characters have NO emotional connection itās just all lust. With these two thereās really only one moment where itās implied they did the do but itās very obviously that their bond is more emotional than anything else from the ease they feel with each other. A lot of tropes that would be long drawn out things in other series are resolved rather quickly here as the pair trust each other and are comfortable with just talking. (Which might be because of the characters age)
Iām avoiding spoilers but this series is just such a relaxing and sweet series about restarting your life and enjoying it for what it is, taking the good and bad all at once and understanding that at the end of the day what we need is good food and good people to share it with.Ā
