Hello again! (This is the anon who long-commented on your Desideratum fic, btw) SO I'd like to, first things first, have a Big Cheer for our lovely half-Galran Prince with the flowing locks- Lotor! I'm not going to lie, I nearly fell out of my seat at his big reveal. I liked how Keith didn't know that he was a halfling until it Hit Him In The Face. It was an interesting contrast to how most writers imply that the entire empire knew that Lotor was a halfling from the start. (1/?)
(2/?)I also liked that Keith’s age was commented upon. I hope that it’ll be rectified soon, but it could also turn out to be an interesting plot bunny. And is it just me, or does Keith notice Lotor’s emotions a lot more than he does others? I mean, sure he’s cautious, but it seemed like he was hyper-aware? Is that the start of a crush I see? Or well, it’s prob just me. And Acxa, oh ACXA! I had the feeling that that was just the beginning of a beautiful but dangerous friendship as I read it.
So, I took a few days to respond because my natural response after receiving your comments was just incoherent shrieking with delight, and you deserve more than that. (Also I got violently ill over Christmas and am just now recovering, because you needed to know that.) But just so you know? This set of comments is the best Christmas present I have received in my life.
I’m so glad you liked Lotor’s reveal, and that Keith didn’t realize he was a half-breed! One thing I picked up on in the show is that Lotor was judged for his generals not being full galra, but not for being only partially galra himself. It seemed likely to me, from that, that his mixed blood status was unknown, and that’s why his half-blood generals were seen as surprising at best and shameful at worst. I much prefer for Lotor to have active events in his backstory leading to his exile, rather than just being exiled for being a half-breed. Were that the case, he’d never have been brought back.
I have a lot of feelings about Keith’s age and maturity. It’s a combination between the knowledge that humans have (even on earth in comparison to other species) an extremely prolonged childhood and short adulthood - what if the galra had a similar childhood but a comparatively long adulthood? Also, considering that Coran’s grandfather was young and spry enough to build the Castle of Lions 600 years ago, it seems that aliens have a different lifespan than humans. So I set the galra up to live for 1,000 deca-phoebs, or slightly under 1,000 years. From what we have seen in the show, I think it makes sense! And we do know that quintessence can extend one’s life…
That’s all I will get into on that subject for now.
It is in Keith’s best interests to watch how people react to him. If Lotor reacts unexpected patterns, or in ways different from his peers, well, that’s just a good thing to keep in mind, isn’t it?
I’m glad you like the interactions with Acxa! I feel like all the generals need to form a close, bonded friendship, and Keith is no exception. Acxa is fun to write, and I look forward to exploring her hidden depths.
