Waking up in a hobbit's basement in Portland on day 7 of the tour is an exhausting yet exciting feeling. The days since we left San Fran have blurred together in a mix of random friends, good times, and fine-tuned real things music. After San Fran we headed to Arcata to play a show at the Jamabalaya in the square, visit Sidelines for pint night, and then crash on Hilani's floor in a 4 AM stuper. The next day (Day 5) showed our exhaust and lack of sleep, although we still made it a couple miles up the coast to College Cove for some brisk body surfing and basking in the beauty of the Northern California Coastline. After the beach, some of the group decided to check out Dawn's (the inspiration for Squarepants' Krusty Krab restaurant), while others wandered in the greatness of the redwood curtain. After the days adventures we headed to Brance's house for a birthday celebration, beginning to indulge maybe too much too soon.
The party for Hilani was a hit, and we cannot thank her enough for her radiance and hospitality in Arcata. The band rocked the show in the livingroom, showing the guests their california surf sounds, while other people finished up the pool and ping pong tournament of champions--which became much less orderly with increasing levels of intoxication and exhaustion.
The long drive to Portland was an ominous thought waking up late on Day 6, frantically trying to piece together the evening prior as well as arrange the band equipment into the suburban. After chains were purchased, and gas was pumped, we headed out for the long road to Portland, around an 8 hour drive, concerned about the frosty treasures Grant's Pass might show us on the road. Luckily, the roads were free of snow and the caravan was able to ride on through to Oregon without fret, and the thought of returning the chains was a small but sweet victory.
We all arrived in Portland around 6:30, just in time to stop at a friends' as well as load in for the show at Ash St. Saloon. A dark and romantic bar on Ash St. next to famous Voodoo Doughnuts, the show was a hit with the surprisingly large amount of patrons. The harmonies were impressive and the sound was evidence of all the hard work. The band room was inside a chimney and was really cool, except we think they burned people in there at some point. Just kidding.
Sorry the blog hasnt been up to date but we kinda lost our minds in Arcata or on the road, be sure to look for the next updates.
