Vocaloids!
giving a character a condition that makes him more prone to sunburns and then giving him sun magic was very mean, past me. very mean, indeed.
dee-dee and co dont generally like to direct their magic. dee-dee and midnight will on occasion to show off, but aura's so shy that they likely wont no matter what. they all prefer to stay away from an opponent, fighting solely with magic while they stay safely behind, giving them the ability to survey the entire scene
nightshade only ever directs her magic in subtle, snappy motions, like a flick of the wrist, and only ever when still. in combat, she's constantly moving, trying to get close to her opponent in order to attack, teleporting and shapeshifting to dodge and counter. she prefers to overwhelm the enemy with a barrage of both magical and physical attacks, stunlocking them before dealing a powerful blow, repeating this pattern again and again until they quit or become too exhausted to fight anymore
ash loves to direct his magic even in fights. gestures and poses have become an integral part of spellcasting for him, especially with smaller spells, but he often pairs them with larger-scale ones cast solely through will. his fighting style is sort of a combination of his partners': he keeps his distance, but he narrows in on his opponent and attempts to disorient them and wear them down. he hates fights, but tries to make them fun while he's in them, so he ends up being super theatrical, as if they were in a play or something
theo almost never directs his magic, even less so than dee-dee. similar to her, however, he prefers to stand back in fights, although he strays away from the bullet hell style that his companions utilise. he instead prefers to trap his opponent, rendering them immobile, and slowly drain them of their energy through magic. he keeps his guard up in case they escape, though it is incredibly rare for him to do anything other than teleport away and try again. like midnight, he is a strategist above all else. given the fact that his soul is fractured, making it very easy for him to die, he doesn't really have any other choice...
callie sometimes directs her magic, and for the same reason as dee-dee and ash: to be Extra. she's the only one of the quintet who actually enjoys fighting, evident by the fact that she is almost always the one to start them. though she claims to prefer strategic moves and traps and whatnot over just beating the person up, it is not very difficult to send her into a rage and cause her to start attacking at full force
tristan, being an artificial mage, has no choice but to direct his magic. they have fun while fighting and usually prefer going hand-to-hand, but they have learned some tricks from dee-dee on how to avoid getting the shit beaten out of them. they are much like ash in their fighting style (aside from their preference for melee), though they don't do much to change the scene around them and instead mess directly with their opponent's body through telekinesis
warren is all-or-nothing when it comes to directing his magic; he will do so all the time when he's in a lighter mood but not at all when he has to be serious. he is very much not a fighter, and his magic isn't the strongest, but he is quite good at defensive spells. his usual strategy is to defend himself while his opponent tires themself by continuously attacking. if he were in an rpg, he would absolutely be a healer class
lydia is very reserved with her magic, and as such, very rarely directs it. she also prefers not to use spells that have a visible effect on the area around her such as manifestation. she's very good at settling fights before they begin, but if she was ever in a situation where she needed to defend herself, she would do everything in her power to guard herself and her companions and immobilise the enemy. only in extremely dire circumstances will she attack them back, though she is less of a runner than theo is
simon can only ever be seen directing his magic when demonstrating something, so while it would be wrong to say that he never does, it's not something he's that likely to do outside of certain contexts. he prefers a battle of wits over anything physical, but he can be especially brutal if someone manages to piss him off enough. his main goal in those circumstances is to try to scare the absolute hell out of the person who pushed him over the edge, that way they never try something like that again. as such, he doesn't have a specific style and instead adapts to the situation he's in. fights with him are almost always short-lived, as he can't stay enraged for too long, but they can leave his opponent or even himself scarred for a while
juno, despite allowing themself to be more dramatic, has kept a lot of the same habits as simon. they prefer to let their power speak for itself, in a way, instead of distracting an opponent with flashy moves. in combat, they are even more inclined to using the scare technique, though they have leaned towards doing so in less physical ways. instead of beating the daylights out of someone, they instead alter reality around them, reveal deep secrets as a way to show how far they can dig through the person's mind, or anything else to send a message of "don't fuck with me." if, by some chance, the person still wishes to test them, juno will do whatever they see necessary to make that person's life a living hell until they finally back off. or just kill them. depends
youd think i would make the sun character the fuller, rounder one and the moon character the sleek, slender one and yet here we are
