So I guess you are back on Tumblr
What is your advice for someone who's trying to write their own independent show but is not sure about what to do for locations? And how many of the scenes in Supernatural are real and how many are built sets?
WOW, sweetass question yo. OK, there are so many things to consider. but first and foremost, tell YOUR Story and let your sets and locations aid you in that, but be flexible.
Understand that writing a scene to take place in a Mansion or the heart of the downtown core can get expensive, so you need to pick your key locations that tell the meat of your story and be flexible on the others. Also make sure to write enough page count to minimize a midday move thus taking away valuable shooting time
Size Def' matters, you may have found the absolute perfect location but if it is too small to shoot in easily you have to be willing to walk away from it. Better to have a lesser location and finish your movie than the perfect Location and not.
to answer your last, it is all dependent on many variables. If we have a major action sequence we will often build it in order to make it more practical to shoot. Or maybe we will because there is need for more work in the Stage. Actor Availability to Location Availability, etc etc etc.
I hope that this helped, I think I went on and on and on, I do that sometimes
