Ruins of Loulan (Xinjiang, China).
Loulan was an ancient oasis city, the eastern gateway to the Taklamakan Desert crossing on the Silk Road. Its enviable location, supplied by the Tarim River, brought it to the attention of two great powers of the time – the Xiongnu on the eastern Asian Steppe, and Han Dynasty China. The Xiongnu and the Chinese struggled for control of Loulan until well into the 2nd century AD.
