Just wanted to make sure you were aware of this. Someone posted about your fic in a plagiarism blog. https://www.tumblr.com/fanfic-plagiarism-watchdog/819632334109310976/millennium-georgia-a-han-leia-fic-on-ao3-has
thanks for letting me know. i’ve spoken with cicfics about inspiration before! their fic, nhi, was also inspired by someone else’s (erindarroch’s, i believe), millennium is currently inspiring a btvs au fic (luciisversion), and the line goes on. there is overlap with both stories being small town aus and having a diner be a central setting, but the cores, plots, arcs, etc. of our stories are totally different.
nhi is focused on family/marriage dynamics between han and leia and small town issues, following the plot of the original trilogy. in this au han and leia marry early, live together, and most of the story follows them through those early stages of that relationship. millennium is a supernatural au following the plot of beautiful creatures. hanleia is of course included, but the core of the story has to go with the curse and the supernatural component, not the relationship between han and leia.
small town aus have lots of overlap! there’s only so much about small town dynamics that can be explored, but a 1950s family-dynamic au fic and a 1990s supernatural au fic are going to be fundamentally different. the “shop” in millennium was actually inspired by the “pop-n-shop” which is a heavily used location in the beautiful creatures book. it acts as the meeting point for ethan, link, and lena throughout the book. i can point to most things in millennium as directly inspired by beautiful creatures, both the book and movie, which has always been explicitly mentioned.
of course characters overlap, as they are both hanleia fics using characters from the original trilogy. han is going to be emotionally avoidant in just about every iteration of him. leia is going to be brash and impulsive which a strong sense of morality, that’s who she is in canon. my story has no marriage, no central conflict around kids, no isoholder antagonists, no big car race, and no plot inspired by the original trilogy. nhi has no supernatural elements, no core conflict around light vs dark, no curse, and is not southern gothic.
inspiration is not plagiarism. if i were to copy and paste large sections of text from nhi and reformat them to fit my story, that’s plagiarism. if i wanted to make a 1950s au surrounding family dynamics using the plot of the original trilogy, thats plagiarism. if i wanted to write a central plot having to do with marriage and kids instead of a curse, that would be plagiarism. writing a small town au with a diner in it is not plagiarism.
cicfics is an incredible author with amazing stories to tell. nhi is a wonderful fic (and actively being uploaded to ao3 now, everyone should go read it!), but it is only similar to millennium in those very few, specified ways mentioned above, which fall into the “small town au” category.
