i really need a detailed examination of the playlist 😫😫😫

hi anon !! i would literally love nothing more than to deep dive into all of it on this fine saturday morning :)) firstly here is a link to the playlist itself just in case you (or someone else who happens across this) haven't had the pleasure of viewing and/or listening to it.

in terms of your ask, i'm not 100% clear on what you're looking for, so i'm going to start out with some general lore and lay the groundwork, and then i'll go on to explain/examine some of my personal favorite songs on the playlist.

the "rooftop" playlist was first created on September 25, 2022 and about half of the songs were added that day. the 25th is the only day that jamie added to the playlist (using his mom's spotify account - which is still endlessly hilarious to me tbh). this is not the first playlist trevor has made with the intent of collaborating with jamie to "curate a vibe" for their home or whatever haha. here is a screenshot that i took of the og apple music playlist that sometimes also gets talked about:

people have since recreated this original playlist on spotify for posterity's sake - here is a link i found to one of those as i am presently unable to find the OG as i have deleted apple music. the long and the short of it all is that the apple music playlist is FAR LESS SENTIMENTAL and to me reads more like a hype playlist; whereas, rooftop is more of a vibe, something that took effort and love to create, and something that trevor very pointedly wanted to share with jamie. trevor was strictly an apple music guy before he met jamie, and i think it speaks volumes that he would begin to use a whole new streaming service just to appease him, yet jamie won't even go through the effort of spending pennies on the dollar to make an account for himself. generally speaking, that alone feels like a reflection of my general characterization of the two of them as a duo.

to my knowledge the only song ever removed from the rooftop playlist is lover by tswift, and, i believe, it was removed shortly after trevor started dating dixie in 2022. i think it is important to note here that lover was one of only six songs that jamie ever added to the playlist. they were all added the same day and the other five are still there. additionally, jamie has a separate playlist (in his mother's spotify account) just called cali where, on September 25th, he added lover and it remains there to this day. it needs to be noted here that the bulk if not all of the songs on "cali" are songs that trevor likely introduced him to while living together because they are pretty much all on rooftop as well.

trevor has another playlist that was originally created by cole caufield that trevor is the sole music provider for (even though both cole and kirby dach are also able to access it) called cookie szn - i only mention this cause trevor generally has incredible music taste, and you should give it a listen.

one last thing that i need to be so clear about before i get into song analysis: this was a playlist made with the intent of listening to it - as two young hockey players living alone in california far from family - on a rooftop while the sun is setting.

okay now that i've spieled on this for far too long, here are some of my fav songs on the rooftop playlist and what i generally think of the vibes as a whole.

we start off strong with song number 4: sophia - clairo

this is a song about forbidden sapphic love. this is a song that is about "knowing what you want, but feeling scared to reach out for it. but if you tried, you could have it" (clairo on twt). most notable verse in my opinion:

then we move on to number 7: wildest dreams (tv) - tswift

now i know that this is unironically one of trevor's all time favorite songs, so it was always going to be here; however, while we have it here, we may as well analyze. this is yet another song about being secretive with a lover, wanting to escape attention, etc. however it's also about breaking up. most notable verse:

i think the craziest possible song to have on any playlist that you made with your close good friend is number 27: cleopatra - the lumineers (swiftly followed by number 28: sleep on the floor - the lumineers)

cleopatra is unironically one of my favorite songs. it's honestly gut-wrenching to listen to no matter how many times i've heard it. the following to me seems to very obviously be the most notable verse:

^i literally can't think about this for too long or else i'll get stomach sick, so here is all i'll say. this song to me speaks to a level of devotion often only seen in 13 year old dogs. it is a WILD thing to put on a bro-centered sunset watching playlist, and it is also hard to recover from psychically.

moving swiftly along. i am jumping ahead to song number 70: use somebody - kings of leon.

this is one of only 5 songs jamie added to (and kept on - rip lover) this playlist, and this is my personal favorite of these still existing 5.

of course this song is a classic at this point. kings of leon really popped off with this one. obviously the opening verse is one of the most iconic

this post is already so fucking long; however, i will leave you with something that i said to my friend the other day - song number 102: back to december - tswift was added on october 26, 2022 - a full year and a bit before jamie was initially traded, and even the knowledge that it was added so much earlier didn't stop me from bringing up the fact that Jamie was traded on January 8th - ANYWAYS !!!

numbers 96 and 99 are particularly interesting to me, but i've been sitting her for an hour now, so again sorry this post is actually so fucking long - i know you initially just wanted me to deep dive some songs, but i figured i'd give lore for those potentially unaware-, but i am more than happy to continue expanding on all of this, and there are obvs many songs i've left off this list that are equally insane. thanks for giving my an excuse to talk about all this, anon :))

hello, anon !! i sincerely hope your exams went well :))) i just finished up my first year of grad school, so i am halfway done with my masters (holy fucking shit)

thank you for your ask !! as you may know, (or may not idk how apparent it is on my blog lmao) i am a tried and true jamie pilled bitch !! ughhh my beloved. i have genuinely given a lot of thought to this ask, and that it why i let it sit for so long. i wanted to make sure that i can give you something that i find beautiful and true.

in terms of my current thoughts, it is true that often times, many people fail to think of it what it feels like to be the one who leaves. i have been leaving pretty consistently for the past decade, and no matter how hard i try, something always either pulls me back or catches up to me. to be the one that leaves first is to carry the weight of all you left behind.

it is also beautiful when you are finally allowed to let go of whatever it may be that you left behind. i think that jamie let go far before trevor joined the flyers. i think that jamie found a place that was finally his to traverse on his own. and i think he traversed it with the understanding that when you are no longer in someone's shadow, when you no longer feel that you must wear whatever mask was handed to you by a team that only ever wanted to throw you away once you became a liability - then, and only then, can you finally look to the sky with any sort of certainty of self.

i think that his trade was obviously heartbreaking for many reasons, but i also think that it opened a necessary door to his promised future. coming to the flyers allowed him to finally heal in myriad ways that he simply was not able to do when he was still with the ducks. the level of care and love that he has received with this new team is probably something that 19 year old jamie could never fathom. i think that when trevor finally joined him a year and a half later, jamie was so much more of himself, so much more whole than he had been previously, and i think that is why they continue to work so well. jamie is quiet and understated and sometimes angry but always caring. he is intentional and reserved, but affectionate when he feels he can be.

there is a level of safety and camaraderie and love that is so present with the flyers as a team, organization, and fanbase. every single cog in the beautiful machine is die hard, but we cannot forget that it is still a machine. there is always the chance that something will break, but i think that jamie now has the tools to fix it.
