How would I react if the next time they meet the mc they see that mc is wearing necklace with an engagement ring in it? (And if they didn't already know it was for them before they died, how would they react if when they ask about it mc just smile sadly and say "i mean, they're back now but i don't know if it's a good idea anymore... I love them, i really do, but i don't want to get my hopes up just to be hurt again..."
😭😭😭
I’m going to do the version where I doesn’t know it’s for them. The first one is… Actual Spoilers.🤐 Also, I’m assuming they both had unresolved feelings before The Incident.
Sorry this one took a bit longer, it kind of got out of hand… as you can see.😅 I need to work on cutting down on the set-up in the future… And maybe have longer ones like this be a once in a while thing. Hope you don’t mind the length, anon.😣
I’ll put it under a read more because, try as I might, there’s still gonna be some spoilery details. I just be like that.🤷♀️
———
As you both sit within the dim lighting of your cramped room, huddled together between stacks of tomes and papers, I stares at you.
They’re supposed to be helping you prepare for the next case in your letter by searching the records hemming you in, but at some point I glanced over to ask you a question and realized they couldn’t look away.
They’ve noticed that happening a lot, since you found each other again.
It’s because you’re different from how they remember. Not drastically - they can tell it hasn’t been that long since your parting - but it’s like coming back to a place you call home and realizing that it’s changed in your absence; that time didn’t stop turning while you were gone.
It’s these changes that draw I’s gaze. Freckles on spots where there used to be none. A ring hanging from a chain round your neck. Faint scars cutting across your skin, never fully healed. A ring hanging from a chain round your neck. Weariness in your eyes that was not there when they left you.
A ring hanging from a chain round your neck.
If they still had any breath to draw, they think it would have died on their lips.
It’s not one they recognize from your years together: it’s too pristine, and worth more than even your families would normally spend. Whoever the accessory belongs to, they must have spent a small fortune. They must also mean a great deal to you - why else would you keep their engagement ring so close to your heart?
Of course, whispers a small voice in their mind. You are always too late. Too late to save them. Too late to keep them. Too late, too late, too late -
“You’re staring, I.”
They startle, blinking as they are yanked out of their spiraling thoughts. You’ve turned from the book you were flipping through and are now studying them instead. They hate that they can’t read the look on your face. They always used to know what you were thinking.
…Would the owner of that ring know what was in your mind right now?
“Sorry,” they manage to breathe out past the lump in their throat. “I wasn’t aware.”
You give them a small smile, eyes still filled with that strange mix of emotions they can’t define. Slowly, as if approaching a wild animal, you reach over and lay your hand on top of theirs. The warmth from your touch is still alien to them after so long apart, and they feel their fingers twitch in surprise. Idly, they wonder what the contact feels like to you - can you even sense anything underneath your palm?
“Something’s troubling you,” you say after a few moments. It’s a statement, not a question. I tries not to grimace, but they can tell their mouth still pulls into a frown.
“Not at all!” they reply, too quickly. They’re sure a blush is forming on their face as they try again. “It’s - it’s nothing. I’m fine.”
You hum in acknowledgement, but you also don’t stop staring, which means you aren’t convinced. If this were the past, I would have kept insisting they were alright - that there was nothing for you to worry about.
If this were the past, they would have avoided the subject and ran away.
Look where that got them, though: sitting on a floor they barely feel beneath them while you proudly wear a token of someone else’s affection. So even though they can’t move their gaze from your joined hands, they still find the courage to ask their next question.
“That ring…” they begin, clenching the hand you don’t hold when they feel you stiffen. “Is it - I mean, uh, whose - who does it belong to?”
You’re quiet for so long that the air becomes stifling. Congratulations, I, the voice in their mind snarks. You just had to be nosy. They’ll never talk to you again.
Before they can fully panic, you finally reply. “It’s mine,” you say with a carefully neutral voice. “I bought it for someone, but - “ A pause. “ - well, they never got it, as you can see.” I hates the self-deprecating laugh that accompanies the last part.
They wish they were brave enough to see what face you make. An uncomfortable silence follows your confession, and I searches for the words to soothe you. What do they even say? ‘I’m sorry?’ ‘Their loss?’
‘Choose me instead’, supplies their traitorous mind, but they squash that thought before it hurts the both of you.
“I see,” is all they manage, and if they knew how they would disappear right then and there.
“I could always give it to them now, I suppose…,” you continue, running your thumb over the ring’s surface, “but I’m not sure it’s a good idea. Getting my hopes up… would probably just hurt me again.” The hand still resting on I’s trembles.
I bites their lip, swallowing down the words that threaten to spill out - let me keep it, and I’ll make sure you never suffer again. A surefire way to destroy your rekindled friendship. Instead, they look at you and earnestly say, “They - they would be foolish not to accept it… whoever they are.”
The words taste bitter on their tongue, but the gentle smile that blooms on your face is worth the acridity.
“Thank you, I.” They watch your gaze become wistful as it turns to the hands still joined between you. “Maybe in the future, then.”
If they still had a heart to break, they think it would have shattered at that moment. Silently - selfishly - they send a prayer to Ezra, though it fills them with guilt and self-loathing.
A prayer that the future you hope for arrives long after they are gone.
So, for race there is going to be some restriction on what the PC can be. The MC always has to be half human (since their mother is a human woman from one of the noble families of Mordent), but there are six options for the race of your other parent. No matter which race you pick, the MC begins the story ostracized by others due to Reasons.
The option that you choose impacts the beginning stat bonus you get and gives you additional customization options for your character’s appearance, as well as different flavor text during the story.
How would the ROs react to a wizard MC that always uses fireball for any situations without any concern for the safety of themselves or others
Oh, boy… 👀
———
I: Constantly Stressed™. What if you hurt someone?? What if you hurt yourself?! Pleads with you to find another spell to use - or at least to be more careful! Probably cries - they don’t want to be separated again.😢 They don’t like it, but they’ll stay with you to try to minimize the risk. Would be more unhappy the longer you do it.
Akriel: She thinks it’s fun - the first few times. As the novelty wears off, though, she starts to get concerned. Don’t you think this is a bit… much? You’re putting the group in danger. And even she thinks you’re drawing too much attention to them. Mysteriously vanishes each time you do it - she can’t have anything ruining her reputation.
Firan: Judges you, hard. You do realize you are a wizard, correct? There are so many spells you could learn - you can even raise the dead! Yet you insist on almost blowing yourself up. He will even be gracious enough to teach you some spells, if you beg properly. As long as he isn’t in danger, though, he sees no reason to stop you.
Clove: You’re scaring them.😰 They don’t really like loud noises - or all the attention you draw to them with your antics. They won’t ask you to stop, though - they’ll just suffer through it. Probably the one in most danger from the explosions: when they’re raging, they might not notice what’s happening. I don’t see it ending well for them if no one stops you.
E: Activates Protective Mode. Already bodily carrying you away from the scene before the spell is even completed: they made an oath to keep you safe, and they intend to keep it - even if they have to protect you from yourself!😤 Not happy that you’re putting other people at risk. If they can’t stop you, they’ll just have to take out the enemies before you can.
Lei: Doesn’t really care about it. It doesn’t matter to her whether you blow yourself or someone else up. If you put her in danger, though, she will be pissed: MC will probably have to watch their back for a while.👀 As long as she’s safe, though, feel free to use Fireball as much as you want… just leave some of the enemies for her.
Dimitrius: Not really surprised: his Sight warned him this would happen. He’ll let you do whatever you want so long as you don’t endanger him or his grandmother. Will intervene if he Sees you’re going to get hurt - he was hired to guide you, and he can’t do that if you’re dead. The one expressionlessly watching on as you burn something down - again.
Noel: …Are you a fool? You are an investigator, not an arsonist. How are they going to find anything if you keep blowing up everything around you? They aren’t particularly concerned for your safety, but are worried for everyone else. Will argue with you about it, but if she can’t make you stop then she will eventually leave the party.
Uriel: Cheers you on - from a safe distance, of course. He enjoys the chaos you create, since it makes everything a little less boring. Acts as the devil’s advocate for any arguments from the other party members. She would probably be a bit sad if you got hurt, but not enough to tell you to stop. The only one happy with the situation.😅
Quick question are you aware of a dnd magic item called the ring of spell storing just in case you don’t know it’s a ring were a spell caster could store a spell then they could give it to non-spell castors to use a spell
So imagine the chaos ensued if a necromancer MC gives these rings to their undead servants and store all the rings with fireballs
🤣 I hope you don’t mind, anon, but the thought of this was too funny - I had to write it out.
———
“We need to talk,” E declares, falling into step beside you as you search the misty graveyard. Their voice is determined - the one they use when they’re preparing for an argument. On your other side, Noel silently appears with a glint in their eye - never a good sign.
“About what?” you ask, though you already know the answer. You’ve been subtly trying to avoid this conversation for weeks. It’s unfortunate the suspect of your current case decided to flee to such a deserted location - it’s given your companions the opportunity they needed to strike.
“Your servants,” Noel states plainly, confirming your fears. “They are becoming a liability.”
Before you can begin to protest, E interjects. “There’s nothing wrong with using whatever spells you want! We just think it’s gotten a bit… excessive.”
“I don’t think so,” you pout.
Noel gives you a blank stare. “They nearly burnt our wagon to a crisp last week - as well as the entire forest around it. Is it truly necessary for them all to cast Fireball?”
“That was an accident! And they took care of all the dire wolves, didn’t they? They’re useful!”
“They are a menace to society,” she replies.
“…Uriel likes them,” you grumble petulantly. You know that might be proving their point, but you feel you have to defend yourself somehow.
“Look,” E begins, placing their gauntleted hand on your shoulder. “We aren’t saying to get rid of them. All we’re asking is for you to rein them in a little. Maybe cut back on the explosions.”
“Absolutely cut back on the explosions.”
Two sets of eyes stare at you expectantly, one pleading and the other exasperated. This is exactly why you wanted to avoid these two - their combined pressure is suffocating.
“…I suppose I could do that,” you acquiesce, and watch as E’s face lights up with a bright smile.
“That’s great!” they exclaim, relief palpable. “Even though your zombies aren’t here right now, I was still kind of worried about being set on fire.”
“About that -“ you begin to say, but a guttural howl drowns out your words. A hulking monstrosity of flesh and bone bursts out of the crypt just a few yards away, oozing both blood and malice. Your runaway suspect, you assume.
E immediately brandishes their shield - physically blocking you from the creature’s sight - while Noel tightens their grip on the handle of their cane, poised and ready. Before either can make a move, however, they both go rigid with shock - though not because of the creature.
You imagine they weren’t expecting the sound of half a dozen spells dissipating to fill the air.
“…What.”
“MC, no - “
“I can explain!” you frantically shout as your undead servants materialize around you.
“You gave them invisibility spells?!” Noel splutters. You believe this may be the most emotion they have shown since you met them.
“I thought it was a good idea! Then they could come with me wherever I go!”
“Belenus’ balls,” is all E says, their face white.
“There were still some slots left in the rings,” you try to explain. “What was I supposed to do, just let them go to waste?”
“Yes.” Noel grits out, fuming. You think you hear something sounding suspiciously like ‘incorrigible idiot’ muttered after, but it’s too quiet to tell.
“It could be worse,” E supplies, trying to be optimistic. “At least it wasn’t the other spell!”
Their smile fizzles out when they see the look on your face.
“Run, now,” Noel orders, immediately sprinting away from the scene. E is quick to sweep you into their arms and set off behind them. The explosion of fire that follows a few seconds later is near cataclysmic - the heat sweltering even dozens of feet away. Your ears are still ringing when E eventually lowers you to the ground, the three of you (plus six singed zombies) surveying what used to be the graveyard - now reduced to a burning, smoldering ruin.
“Well,” you say brightly when the incredulous silence becomes uncomfortable. “Whatever that was, it’s definitely dead now!”
E mumbles a prayer beside you, and you can almost physically feel Noel rolling their eyes. Your zombies continue to stare dead-eyed into the distance, uncaring of the terrible destruction they just wrought.
“Like I said earlier,” Noel deadpans, giving your servants a wary look while smoke rises in the distance. “A menace to society.”
This time, you’re not sure it’s the zombies they are describing.
What are the ROs types (keeping in mind lots of MCs can probably date them)?
I've tried to keep it open so that many different types of MCs can date each RO, but still show that they have preferences. There are some personality traits they're more drawn to, but MCs with any personality can romance them. 🥰
The important thing with the ROs is alignment. MCs of certain alignments will find it much easier to get close to certain ROs, while other ROs will dislike their actions and views at the beginning.
---
I: (likes: good, dislikes: evil)
They like someone who is kind, and who tries to help others - or at the very least, doesn't actively hurt people when its not necessary. They have a hard time accepting people who go out of their way to hurt others, or who know their actions will cause harm but do not care.
I is drawn to people who are brave - since it's a trait they lack - and merciful - since they believe people should treat each other with compassion.
Akriel: (likes: chaotic, dislikes: lawful)
She likes people who are confident and driven - someone who is just kind of drifting by in life usually doesn't catch her interest. She doesn't care about rules or traditions, and won't mesh well with an MC who is adamant on following them.
Akriel finds it easier to be around people who are sociable or emotional. She's not exactly sure how to interact with someone who is withdrawn, or who only focuses on facts and logic.
Firan: (likes: lawful, dislikes: chaotic)
He tends to like people who have an interest in learning. He finds it easier to converse with someone if they are knowledgeable in some field of study. He dislikes people who are unpredictable, and thinks it's better for someone to have a structure or code that they follow.
Firan is drawn more to people who are logical or impulsive. He believes relying on emotions to dictate your actions is foolish, but can also respect someone who isn't afraid to act immediately to get what they want.
Clove: (likes: neutral, dislikes: chaotic)
They like people who are calm and open-minded. It's admirable to them when someone focuses on their own desires and motivations, without worrying about what others will think of them. They don't like when someone is too erratic, though.
Clove gets along better with people who are reserved or timid. They are still learning how to interact with others, and can get overwhelmed when someone is too loud and outgoing. They also can relate to someone who gets nervous very easily.
E: (likes: good, dislikes: evil)
They find it more attractive when someone is willing to help others, even if there is no personal gain. Honor and loyalty are very important to them, and they are more drawn to people who value those as well.
E likes people who are genuine and brave. They admire people who are able to face dangerous situations with courage, and who are sincere in their interactions with others.
Lei: (likes: evil, dislikes: good)
She finds it attractive if someone is willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want. She thinks people who preach about morals are weak, and is more drawn to someone who isn't afraid to get their hands dirty.
Lei gets along better with people who are ruthless and reserved. She thinks compassion is a weakness, and has little patience for someone who constantly tries to engage her in conversation.
Dimitrius: (likes: neutral, dislikes: lawful)
He admires people who put the happiness and safety of those they care about above everything else, even the law. He also finds it attractive when someone is faithful and keeps the promises they make.
Dimitrius is more drawn to someone who is logical and cautious. He tends to dislike people who are overly superstitious, or who put themselves and others in danger because of rash actions.
Noel: (likes: lawful, dislikes: chaotic)
Someone who is always doing what they want, no matter the consequences, would easily get under Noel's skin. They believe it's important to follow the rules, and tend to like people who agree with this opinion.
Noel believes it's important for a person to be cautious and genuine. They hate when someone has a habit of lying, and believe the truth is most important. She prefers to plan things carefully, and respects others who do the same.
Uriel: (likes: chaotic, dislikes: lawful)
She likes to have fun, and enjoys being with someone who can match her energy. She doesn't care at all about the norms of society, and mostly finds anyone who strictly follows the rules a complete bore.
Uriel likes people who are sociable, since he hates being unable to tell what someone is thinking. Unsurprisingly, he is drawn more to people who are deceitful - he likes to make it a game to see who is the better liar.
Could you please tell us about the classes the MC could be
I’d be happy to! 😊 The way I have it planned right now is that the reader can choose from different groups or individuals the MC spent time with and studied under during their life in Mordent, with most of these connecting to two different classes to choose from. There is one special case I’ll detail below. At the moment, the options are:
A visiting socialite and occultist from Dementlieu who calls herself a member of the Keepers of the Feather: MCs who spend time with her can take part in her rituals and become either a College of Spirits bard or an Undead warlock.
A cell of the Ulmist Inquisition that hides within the sanitarium in Mordentshire: MCs who choose this have recently developed strange powers they can’t control, as either an Aberrant Mind sorcerer or a Soulknife rogue.
Beatrice Polk, an older woman who takes care of Rudolph van Richten’s herbalist shop in his absence: MCs who choose her can be either a Monster Slayer ranger or a Battle Master fighter as they study the notes van Richten left behind.
A strange figure prowling the graveyards of Mordent whose name and purpose you never discover: from them, the MC can learn how to be a School of Necromancy wizard.
I wonder if the all the ROs have vicious mockery what would their be their best insult to someone
I have a confession, anon: my Vicious Mockery game is weak.😔 I had to search around for some ideas, so some of these may seem a bit familiar.
———
I: They’ve only made one decent insult in their life. The psychic damage for the rest is secondhand embarrassment.
“I will make sure to say a pr-prayer for you. It’s clear you - you will need it.”
Akriel: Brutal. Inventive. Makes her opponent wish they’d never shown up to the fight.
“I was about to insult your parents, but it looks like I shouldn’t bother: they’ve already got you.”
Firan: He comes up with something clever, but then talks for far too long.
“Casting one of my spells on you would just be a waste of components. After all, your minuscule brain could not even begin to comprehend the sheer magnitude of my magical prow - wait, Skeever, let me finish!”
Clove: Unintentional insults that are somehow terrifying. Doesn’t even realize they’re using the spell.
“Do not worry. This will be over quickly. It will not hurt for long.”
E: Their insults would be subtle, and always about the opponent’s character.
“I’d say it’s an honor to fight you, but I don’t make it a habit to lie.”
Lei: Her lines are always said deadpan and sound mildly threatening. Probably causes fear too.
“I should be getting paid to punch your shitty face in. Clearly doing the world a favor.”
Dimitrius: His insults are rare but scathing. Alternatively, just flips them off.
Don’t worry, you won’t be a complete idiot for long - just half of one.
Noel: Always uses insults about the enemy’s lack of intelligence.
“Insulting you is simply a waste of time. Our fight will be long concluded before your mind can process my words.”
Uriel: Finds what the opponent is most sensitive about and attacks it mercilessly.
“Well now, darling. I’d ask if that’s a shortsword in your pocket, but it’s clear you only have a dagger. At best.”
