Recently also fell in love with the blacksaddle toby which was one of my favorite paintings from FF

Thank you so much anon!! I use himi gouache, the 24 set, sometimes i also use arteza gouache, i dont really know much about brands but these have been very helpful and they are not expensive.

Sorry if this is an odd question, but how did you first go about learning how to draw and paint fish? Are there any books or tutorials you followed, or was it mostly trial and error going off of reference?

Not odd at all! Always keen to give advice for those who ask (´ｰ｀) In general I started practicing watercolor 7 years ago, been painting with goauche for at least 2 years now :-) With the help of short youtube tutorials, media content and just painting what i see irl, I got to this level 🫡

I was always scared of learning animal anatomy and anything animal related, at least i wouldnt practice that until I felt skilled enough to do it, trying every time to use references bc i wanna keep it as real as i can..here are some of my first fish paintings!

Been experimenting new things each time so i eventually got better at it,,,from previous years of practice you could say i already knew how to pick some of the colors, rn im just faster at mixing them, my mind just goes crazy when it comes to colors :P

My advice is to practice what you love, your favorite things, really makes the process a lot easier to bear, but not without forgetting the fundamentals of art, dont be scared to try new things when you’re practicing, you can always learn something new 🐚 JUST PAINT :D HAVE FUN!!

Hi hi hi sorry for the late response!

Umm i started gouache around 2023 i think, but learning watercolor years before helped me a lot understanding wet mediums. I still think is easier to learn gouache first if you also want to know about watercolor though.

Some tips i think would help….dont get a very expensive set when you’re a beginner, brands like arteza and himi gouache are affordable and paint quite good.

Don’t use too much water, make a swatch with dry and wet colors to know which colors change, most blues tend to become a totally different color when dry.

Underpaint your canvas so you can understand more about how the colors work, some are really transparent and others really opaque, experiment a lot, don’t be afraid of ‘wasting’ your gouache, that’s the point :-)

Another tip for those who have watercolor, its actually better to do underpainting with it than gouache, if using gouache use a lot of water and little to no paint, if you use a lot of paint the colors will mix and can get confusing so yeah….

Be patient!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!gouache dries fast but still!!

youtube videos really help, even if that’s not the style you’re aiming for, you can find really valuable information there. Mmm i think that’s all i can say for now, i tend to forget things a lot lol if i think about more tips i’ll update this post, i really hope this was helpful

Hi thank you, sorry for answering late, I’ve been drawing since 2016 and pretty much started posting art the next year, also started posting on tt when the app was new, but I feel I started getting attention in 2021-2022 because the quality of both my posts and art got better LOL get a good camera or scanner

YES I LOVE my dear whitetip reef shark, as for fish i think tequila splitfin :] and parrotfish maybe

I just found you blog an I Love love love your art! I love how vibrant your colors are and how (idk how to say this) deliberate (?) your brushstrokes are. do you have any specific painting exercises you would recomend to someone or any other artists who inspire you?

Mmm specific…not really, when i started with gouache only looked for gouache tips on YT, they’re really good!! but here are some channels that I still frequent if you’re interested in learning more :D
