There are times when Mercy wonders if Aine expects her to leave, to decide that it’s too much, that she’s too complicated, and give up. If reminding her that she’s a lot of work, she’ll be able to head off any hurt that might come. 

And Mercy gets it; she gave up on her family’s approval a long time ago, telling herself over and over that it didn’t matter even though sometimes it felt like the only thing that mattered at all. 

“You did warn me and despite all the warnings, I’m not worried. I’ll keep saying that until you believe me, even if you never do,” she said. Mercy had plenty of time. “So you don’t worry about me, alright?”

She was quiet for a moment, letting the words soak in the same way she had let the bathwater soak in, warm and comforting, still clinging to her skin and making her clothing damp. To hear Aine say something like that made her happy. And it made her want to make Aine feel the same way, however she could. 

Crossing the room, she pressed her hand to the side of Aine’s face, smiling down at her. Mercy’s fingers ran against her jaw, still slightly wet from her bath. When a stray bead of water dripped down, she wiped it away.

“Sorry,” she muttered, shifting back a bit, the smile still on her face. “You know that you’re very dear to me as well, don’t you? If you don’t, I don’t mind telling you over and over. I have time.”

There were things that would require her attention but all of them could wait.

There was a moment, when her heart felt like it had jumped up into her throat, that Mercy couldn’t find any words. And then, when it settled, all the words she could find seemed too cheesy or too plain or too little. Not enough. 

Or maybe she was overthinking what was supposed to be a playful comment, not something to be taken so seriously. Here she was, doing just that. Mercy smiled, resisting the urge to shake her head at her own foolishness. 

“If you do,” she said, “I hope that I can keep all the nightmares away. If not, I’ll be here when you wake. I promise.”

She didn’t want to make a big deal of it but she felt as though her heart was about to jump out of her chest with the way that it was pounding the moment Aine took her hand. Mercy had been in plenty of life or death situations, had felt everything hanging in the balance, but this somehow felt bigger than all that. 

It was silly, she knew, but she liked it.

Gently, she squeezed Aine’s hand, swinging both their arms softly as they continued walking. All the thoughts she had seemed to go right out of her head and Mercy took a moment to find them again.

“Where did you want to go next?”

It was late. 

Already, Mercy had stifled a few yawns, eyelids heavy, as she forced herself to stay awake. The bed was soft - this inn was of higher quality than she would normally pick - and all she had to do was lay back. That, however, would ruin the moment and she didn’t want that.

Her fingers brushed against Aine’s cheek and then over her soft hair. Mercy smiled. It was worth being tired to see the other woman so relaxed, at peace. There was nothing to worry about right now, no show to put on for either of them.

“Your hair is still a little wet,” she said. The cotton of her skirt was even wetter. “If you’re uncomfortable, tell me. I’ll move.”
