The guess is unexpected enough to surprise him into slack-jawed silence for a moment, and then raucous laughter. He couldn’t possibly let her go off on her own now, now when she was so quick to give back as well as she got.
“No, no, not lovers. Definitely not. I knew him, as well as anyone, but I always had my heart set on someone else,” Wei Wuxian explained, still grinning even as he waved his hand dismissively. “Besides, he was a terrifying legend years and years ago–how old do you think I am? I would have been too young for him.”
That was a bit unfair of a point to use, but it was true, at least as far as the story went. In light of everything else, the years he skipped were hardly notable.
She tried to be serious for a moment but his laughter was contagious and Nocome ended up dissolving into a fit giggles. When he stopped laughing long enough to give his explanation, Nocome sobered up as well though her expression remained slightly unconvinced. Something didn’t quite add up but Nocome wasn’t sure what.
“I mean, if he lived that long ago, how do you even know what he looked like? Maybe those drawings are accurate,” she said, leaning forward and warming her hands. She grinned. “But alright, I’ll take your word. Maybe if you tell me what he looked like I could do an accurate sketch.”
Humans weren’t her favored subject but Nocome was good at visualizing things in her mind. Besides, it would help pass the time.
