Dumplin’ was off work on time for a change. With her daughter and egg at home with a friend from Skallen’s school, the mother decided to take her son out for groceries, and just to spend time with him. It was a good time to go and see Ferdo’s shop for the first time, too.
“And you’re sure this is the right shop?” Nyle grumbled as he walked past the sliding glass doors. He glared at the shop owner, resisting the urge to snarl.
“Of course I’m sure!” Dumplin’ said cheerfully. “The monster I met gave me the name and location. I figured we’d look around and see what we can find.”
Nyle nodded at the check out counter. “He doesn’t look like too much of a monster to me.” he pointed out. Dumplin’ followed his gaze, and then inhaled sharply.
He could have passed for a monster. He probably was a monster; his mouth was on the side of his face, and his skin and nails weren’t human... But Dumplin’ and Nyle both knew for a fact that humans liked to disguise themselves as monsters sometimes, either to get into Monster-Only places, or to mingle with other monsters with intent to hurt. Even kill.
Dumplin’ felt her heart begin to pound with fear, and she clutched her purse. Nyle let out a low, soft snarl. “We’re going back to Klaw-Mart, mom. Now.” he demanded. “I’m not about to take another chance.” "No, no. We're shopping here. It'll be fine. I promise."
