Fruit trees need a certain amount of chill hour (Hours below 40 degrees) to become dormant. Depending on varieties, that time can run from 700 to 1000 hours a winter. That is why the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys in California produce most of our fruit.

Daily Ag Fact: 5/31/15

The temperature of the soil is usually the determining factor of when to plant row crops and vegetables than air temperature. Most crops need a minimal soil temperature before they can be planted. Example, corn needs a minimum temperature of 50 degrees. Soil temperature is affected by air temperature, day length, soil type, and depth.
