Look, this technique of provoking a realistic reaction isn’t new to film, (ALIEN, The Exorcist, Willy Wonka…) but I think there has to be a sense of boundary. Filmmaking, above all, is all a trick. The goal of every director is to throw their audience into a story that is so captivating and believable that they forget what they are watching is a facade.I understand the inherent risks in how far this approach to believable acting can go, and I think eventually every director will face the same question: Is the overall safety of your actors more important than perfecting your vision? But I’m definitely jumping ahead. Ultimately, in this case, I believe that if Diane Kruger’s ambition as an actress matched that of Tarantino’s in terms of directing, it was the best way to go. I’d truly be lying if I didn’t think that scene was 100% convincing.
