excUSE ME!! Alec would love having a dog. it'd be a medium to large sized dog and it'd be a dog that needs a lot of exercise and he'd be taking them to the park and play with them for hours. it'd be a really smart dog, that learns quickly but they'd also be super affectionate and cuddle up to him in the evening. I might be biased bc I have an Australian shepherd but I feel like... that breed would work so well with Alec because they are active and cuddly at the same time and !!! alec + dogs = 💜

!!! since the moment i thought of alec with dogs, all i could think of was shepherds - german, swiss, australian etc - because they are active, but very smart and can be challenging at times, but they are very loyal and when raised right very affectionate and cuddly. like also!!  at first, i was thinking husky for alec, but then i realized that i’m projecting, because that’s my fave breed and i thought that husky would be a little bit too messy for alec, especially that he’s busy a lot ( it is fun though to think of a bored husky running havoc in the institute). ceci was also thinking a chocolate lab and i can totally see that too! overall, larger, active dogs is what would fit alec best. 

and don’t even get me started!!! imagine alec taking his dog(s) on a jog in the mornings and when they get back, alec sorts through the reports and tasks for the day, while his puppies curl up in the office and fall asleep (bc that’s what dogs love to do after getting tired). 

also imagine, izzy and alec training and the dogs gets so curious that they keep interrupting them - like izzy trips alec and he gets down, and there they are, grasping the opportunity and licking his neck or swiping their paws at his thigh.

and they sleep at the foot of alec’s bed - which is great, because he gets cold easily, so they are his personal heaters - and maybe when he has a nightmare, one of them would wander up and curl into his side and lie his head on alec’s chest and it’s so soothing that it calms him down really quickly. 

when he starts sleeping over at magnus’, he asks shyly if he can bring the dogs over and he gets a little worried, bc what if the fur gets on magnus’ expensive carpets/clothes? or they chew on something? but magnus loves them and after the first night when they were whining and scratching at the bedroom’s doors and alec admits that they always sleep with him, magnus lets them inside too and they all end up in a cuddly, warm pile.

like don’t get me wrong, alec is very clever, but he ain’t cunning and i’m pretty sure he would have been even worse if not for his diplomatic training

Tbh the thing I'm most excited about in 2x15 is the possibility of scenes between Alec and Aline

listen i didn’t wanna get excited about this in case somehow they don’t interact, but i have been looking forward to it since season 1. there’s so much here to talk about and to explore.

like from the books we know that alec’s coming out inspired other lgb shadowhunters to come out and i’m quietly hoping that we will see that explored and will get to watch how it influenced aline and that they will bond over it. i think it would also be healthy for alec to have someone he can talk to (and vice versa for aline to have someone already out to talk to) regarding being a queer shadowhunter, because while magnus might understand some of alec’s fears and experiences, i feel like he will never get alec’s situation exactly as another shadowhunter who grew up in such a militaristic environment would. (just as alec would never be able to fully get magnus’ experience as a bi downworlder)

also, it would be great if alec would get some friends outside of jace and izzy and i feel like aline could be such a challenging and fun friend for him. just let them be buddies, that’s all i want.

i think a lot of people overlook how different the immortals/faerie were played on the show. i mean normal people don't talk like raphael, merlion and magnus? even their demeanor is different too. so if you expect 'normal' emo convo with malec and compare it with other emo couple scene set in human world, it would be unfair since half of the ship doesn't talk 'normal'. oh, i always find matt were consistently good in malec scenes, after all they did stayed back to rehearse, so it payed off.

i agree so much, i have always thought that it’s especially visible with magnus and meliorn that harry and jade act them out in a bit of a... different way than you would play a regular character. and the conclusion i came to is it’s because of their age/experience (the characters’). i would even say that sometimes they overact those characters and their gestures or reactions, but they do it in such a way that it fits and it actually enhances the portrayal instead of making it ridiculous. 

i think alec and magnus are very different people, they were raised differently, they have different personalities, tempers, experiences, traumas and insecurities and how they act around each other is not always going to be mirrored, because they are different people and they are acted out differently and they are interpreted differently by their actors, but that doesn’t mean that one is better than the other. you relate to one character more or like one character more, but each actor brings unique chemistry to the ship and they both carry the relationship and compliment each other’s weaknesses and strengths imho

Funny that people say they want flawed and well rounded characters, but when they get a character that makes mistakes, is in the process of learning and growing, and is learning how to accept himself and be a mentally and emotionally healthy human being, they get mad and want him to be perfect.

There are some characters in the show that haven’t been shown to have flaws, or make a mistake. Like if they are perfect and can’t do no wrong. Meanwhile, there is Alec, who has, imo, the biggest character development of all main characters so far, and he makes mistakes and learns from them. I find characters like Alec 100% more interesting.Anyways Alec Lightwood is the best and anyone who doesn’t like him is missing on having this amazing gay icon in their lives

real!!! i feel like people don’t read into him that much, or rather they don’t want to go deeper and don’t reflect on the whole picture, rather preferring to focus on nitpicking.

alec has been through such a journey in the span of pretty much 1,5 seasons, it’s wild. honestly, when you compare where he started and where he is now, his character growth is uncanny. there’s also the fact that, I think, he dealt with the biggest myriad of complex problems - starting with internalized homophobia and his coming out, bigotry (both his own towards others and being subjected to it as a gay man), mental health issues, navigating a first relationship, dealing with family issues, career downgrade and upgrade  etc etc. 

like you said I think what makes him such a compelling character is him being so flawed, but also the fact that one can relate to so many issues that he struggles with. it’s not easy to relate to a perfect character who never does anything wrong. making mistakes though? and growing and learning from them? that’s human and that’s something that most people can relate to. personally, i think all characters on the show are shown to be flawed, but those flaws aren’t always addressed with them and very often they don’t reflect on their mistakes and then don’t learn from them - something that doesn’t really happen with alec, because we have seen him make a mistake before, reflect on it, apologize and grow. and that’s such a fascinating thing to watch on your screen.

honestly, alec is such a complex character. there are layers and layers upon him. and if someone doesn’t like him, i don’t mind, because not everyone has to love him, but truthfully? why would someone deprive themselves like that lbr.
