1. Eventually, training Perry to sail got boring– they both kind of figured it would, but neither wanted to stop. So, one day, to “jazz it up”, Perry showed up in the stupidest, ugliest ensemble she could pull together– neons, mixed patterns, stupid layers, full on ridiculous outfit choice, just to see how James would respond. His response was to break down laughing, falling to the ground holding his sides laughing, and she quickly went to change into something normal. Getting back, though, she’d find he was still laughing, tears rolling down his face. This would start a brief “Fashion Disaster-Off”, in which, every day when they met for training, whoever hadn’t dressed the previous day would try to outdo the other’s outfit from the previous day. This had to stop when Perry’s “accessorized” outfit didn’t fit through the door.
2. Years down the line, years of sailing together on many crews– James is finally captain of his own ship. The first time Perry congratulates him and calls him “captain”, he starts crying.
3. In contrast to the previous, Perry becoming a captain and asking James to be her first mate, he starts crying, beyond honored at being asked.
4. James always gets nervous about the risks with new crew– even though he’s trained Perry to handle anything and everything that might come their way, he can’t help but be nervous. At one point on their first trip together, their ship is attacked by pirates. James steps in front of Perry at multiple points, something she brings up later, angry with him for making it seem as though she couldn’t take it. They’d argue about this before Perry would storm off to rest and James would wander the ship, crying on his late watch, feeling awful for making her feel inadequate.
5. The two would make up the next day over breakfast, both crying because “wow some of the stuff I said to you last night was awful”. This would be to the surprise of nobody else on the crew who knew the two were fighting. Nobody else even knew who Perry was, but they knew she and James would make up quickly, and not just because they still had months left in their journey.
