With his baby monk in tow on a horse behind him, Finan rides Péarla to the nearest ridge, where he will likely be able to see Uhtred appear on the horizon when his troop is within close enough distance. His Lord would likely be able to see them as well, especially with the sun still shining in the sky. It would fall to dusk regardless within the next few hours, and Finan would have to give up. But the hopes of their return he was unable to suppress.
The Irishman dismounts his horse, letting her roam free for a while as he takes a seat on a rock, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

After resting in Saltwic for a couple of days and having his meeting with Lady Aethelflaed, Uhtred was anxious to return home. His irritability only intensifying the longer he’s in Saltwic with the memories of Gisela haunting him around every corner. With the promise of support from the Lady of Mercia, and a tentative plan in place, he and the others ready themselves for the journey home. He tries his hardest not to take out his frustrations on his companions, but he shows no mercy to the King’s men, barking orders to them to hurry things up. He’s still angry at them for letting his ex-wife escape.
Thankfully the journey back is graced with some warmer temperatures and no storms on the horizon. They make better time on the return trip. Feeling an anxiousness inside of him the closer they get to home, Uhtred offers to ride ahead to scout the trail, while Hild stays close to Steapa for protection.
Uhtred urges Tintreg to canter as he scans the surroundings on the trail. He has this unsettled feeling like he’s being watched and finds himself resting his hand on Wasp Sting, just in case. He keeps a wary look out, still concerned about what Gisela has planned now that she has escaped.
