she hummed to herself, carrying the basket of food she had gotten from the market. she pulled out her keys, unlocking the door and opening it up.
one step into her home, calling out into the quiet space, “I’m home.” she slipped off her coat, placing the bag down and shutting the door.
not even a second later, a large explosion shook the house, rocking her a bit as she leaned on the wall until it settled.
in the midst of the rumbling, she heard a voice echo from below, “OHHH SO THATS HOW YOU WANT TO BE, HUH?! HAVE TO BE SOOOO STUBBORN!”
after the shaking was over, she took a deep breath and sighed. she was lucky that they decided to live a pretty good distance away from anyone, better than to give people a heart attack thinking that a earthquake was happening.
for maybe the third time this week.
she walked over to a cabinet, taking out a first aid kit and some rubbing alcohol. she knew after all these years never to go down to the basement without some type of bandage.
and with having a husband like hers, it was always necessary.
she made her way to the basement, walking down the stairs and being immediately hit with the smell of smoke and ash.
she coughed a bit, wafting the smell away, “r-robert? d-did you cause another fire?” she called out, trying to look for him through the smoke.
“oh! steamheart!” he calls out somewhere, probably from the right of her. she heard him cough a bit, “just a small one, it’s no big deal-!”
she heard a spark somewhere, a yelp coming right after. she sighed, finding a table to place down the first aid kit and guiding herself along the wall, “didn’t I tell you to keep the fire extinguisher close by?”
“I did!” robert responded, “buuuut….it took up too much space, moved it somewhere.”
she covered up her mouth, “robert, does space really overpower the chance of burning the basement to a crisp?”
she heard him give a laugh, “it overpowers it when your inventing things that will revolutionize society, my dear.” he chided, mumbling about as she heard a bunch of objects hit the floor.
“oh, I know I put it here somewhere….I just need to move a few things…aaaaanddd-AH-HA!” she heard a sputter, and finally, the sound of the extinguisher going off as he sprayed it at the flames.
after a few moments, the fire was put out, only smoke lingered in the room. she coughed again, finding a switch on a wall and flipping it, opening a vent and letting the smoke clear out.
after a while, she coil finally see her husband. googles still on his face, spot on his cheeks and hair covered in ash. she rose a brow, “what were you tinkering with this time?”
robert gave her a grin, picking up his googles and placing them on his head, “weeeelll….I WAS tinkering with the coffee maker,” he motions toward a table, where the now exploded piece of machine sat on.
she blinked, glancing at it, before turning and rubbing her nose bridge, “robert, honey, it worked just fine before,” she goes back to the first aid kit she placed down, grabbing it and walking to him.
he already knew the motions, grabbing a chair and sitting down, sighing dramatically, “yes it worked ‘just fine’, but it would have worked better if I hadn’t accidentally hotwired the wrong one.”
an amused huff escaped her lip, opening up the box, “mmhm,” she held a hand out, watching as he gave her his arm to look at.
she rolled up his sleeve, a few burns here and there, the most being on his hand.
still, with the amount of times he accidentally exploded a invention, she’s surprised he still has all ten fingers.
she began to gently clean the wounds, whispering comforting words whenever he hissed at the alcohol applied to his skin.
after she finished wrapping up his arm, she looked at him, “any other things I should look at?” he shook his head, “nope! that was all I sustained from that.” he stated, a bit too proudly.
she huffed, reaching a hand out to flick his nose, making him whine and rub it, “you shouldn’t be aiming to sustain any injuries.” she scolded, packing up the kit, “you’re going to give me white hair by the end of the week.”
robert grabbed her wrist, pausing her movements, “okay, I know, I’ll be more careful.” he said, rubbing her skin gently, placing his hand over his chest, “on my honor, or I shall be tied up and be stoned to death.”
that made her laugh, rolling her eyes but a loving smile grew on her face, “you’re dramatic.” she spoke, leaning closer to cup his cheek, wiping off a bit of soot on his skin.
he leaned into her touch, his sweet brown eyes staring lovingly into hers, “maybe a bit, but you love it.” he leaned in closer, connecting their lips in a kiss.
she hummed a bit into it, pulling away with a wince, “maybe you should go wash up, you taste like copper and burnt coffee.” he gasped, clenching his shirt with his other hand.
“you wound me, now I’m dead. that hurt more than the explosion did.” he leaned his body onto her, pushing all his weight on her. she giggled, “you sick man! you’re gonna make me fall-!”
they collapsed onto the ground, robert on top of her as he grinned down at her, “now you’re gonna make up for hurting my feelings.” he wiggled his fingers at her, making her almost scream bloody murder as he tickled the life out of her sides.
this was the man she came home to everyday, and she wouldn’t want it to be anyone else.
