English has been honestly a subject that I have taken great interest in high school because it was a subject that I pride myself to be good at because I always had decent grades but I took lesser interest of it in college because of our majors and it was only mostly a repetition of our past lessons so it was easy to keep up with.

This semester was the only subject we took that was actually a relatively new experience for us, the lessons were knew and involved theories which was a first for me to encounter in an English subject. Communication which is an act we do every day was analyzed and would make us realize that the act where we sit there and listen or in front standing would have a very technical side and different factors involved for it to be an effective and successful communication. The theories I mean are the theories by linguist that are involved with the lessons which were taught to us. The other part would be the psychological side, I do not know if I only noticed it because it’s there or because I relate it to my own way of thinking when I encounter those psychological factors, what I mean more specifically is the lesson about nonverbal communication where it may be obvious what we see in kinesics or body movement of other people but we use the body language as a norm and not a human act, he or she doesn’t just act because she has to, it also has a hidden meaning and maybe even a goal.

The recent experience for me, of talking about my parents in front with the passion I had for the personal words I have written, was a great first time of talking in front of people, I know I have the confidence and voice to talk in front but I would only picture it when I’m told to make announcements or ask someone if they lost their pen because speaking in front is not something I would do unless it involves our grades. It may have been for our grades but, I am indeed thankful, for the experience, for the lessons, and for the effort of everyone involved with our learning in this semester’s English subject.

A successful communication is achieved when there is a mutual understanding where the idea and message of the sender is understood by the receiver and is able to respond with another idea which he transmutes in the form of a message. I will be citing three topics from the first two units that I think is considered as an essential part of attaining successful communication in our everyday lives.

Searle’s Speech act theory states that when we are speaking, we consider two things, what is said by us which is called the locutionary force and what we actually do when we say it which is called the illocutionary force. My view on this theory is it sums up the two parts of communication which is the verbal and nonverbal; it is a theory that makes us understand the ways of knowing the thoughts of another person whether it is by the first force which is the speech of the person and listening to what they have to say or the second force that pertains to body language such as facial expressions and body language which can be used to identify the hidden meaning of the intended message. This theory can make us understand the whole intended meaning  just by comprehending the verbal and nonverbal signals, for example; just by saying “its cold today isn’t it?” it can be interpreted as shutting down the air conditioning or lending the person a jacket, this speech theory conveys a more comprehensive way of communication.

The skill most used in communication is listening rather than reading, writing, or speaking and the listening process topic emphasizes the importance of understanding proper process therefore it is logical to involve the proper knowledge of the most used skill in communication to have a successful communication. This process involves receiving, understanding, remembering, evaluating and responding to the message of the sender, this is the most used process in communication which makes learning and understanding it a vital part of achieving an effective communication.

The most practical and applicable topic is the dos and don’ts in listening because I myself is considered guilty when it comes to bad listening habits identical to selective listening, defensive physical posture, and showing fake attention. I chose this lesson as an imperative part of successful communication because I believe that adhering to these positive habits as a listener will personally help me in the communications that I make.
