For this week's Sunday Fish Sketch I decided I wanted to try drawing a medieval fish. In medieval Europe whales were considered to be fish, and one of the most terrifying mythological fish was the Aspidochelone, said to be a whale or whale turtle hybrid. This monster was large enough to be mistaken for a small island; when a ship would land on it, and the sailors build a cooking fire, the heat would cause the Aspidochelone to dive underwater, drowning everyone "onshore".

My rendition here isn't 100% accurate, but to be fair it's also my first time drawing a fish in this style. Fun little sketch to be sure!

Island Turtle bitbeast concept, for @prima-axis 's OC, Lucy Granger. Based on the legends of the Asipdochelone; a monster so big it supports an ecosystem on its back and preys on the sailboats of the ancient world.

She's had this bitbeast for so long and I've never been able to do it justice. This is the closest I've ever gotten and it took me a week of tweaking the anatomy. This is the best I'll probably ever do... TnT

🏝🐢 Aspidochelone- the Island Turtle, sailors of old said you could mistake the creature for an island and those who did would set up up camp on them, but as soon as their fires were lit the beast would sink beneath the waves dragging down those sailors with it.

If you think of it like the Sea Turtle that lays it eggs on land, imagine stepping out of your beach house one day and there's a mountain there that wasn't yesterday. Now imagine what hatching season would look like 😳

So if the collector is a box jellyfish then the titans would be turtles?

More specifically Aspidochelone's! Gigantic sea turtles that can have whole islands on their backs, who typically try to lure people over for the purpose of getting them stranded and then drowning them. Kind of like the lion turtle from ATLA but with more of a stigma. The Titan Trappers still wear the pelts of them, most are just. babys. in order to fit them. kinda messed up ngl

King is just a lil baby aspidochelone that Eda found on a beach and scooped up. Everyone thought he was just a kemp ridley turtle but they were SO wrong. Hunter was mortified to find this out for multiple reasons, but also specifically because he'd one smacked King across a bay with his tail when he was being bothersome.

Kaijune Bonus:  Aspidochelone.

Aspidochelone is a folkloric creature usually described as a giant turtle with an entire island on top of its shell. Weary travelers, thinking they can land safely, will inevitably be shaken off or downed when the creature submerges.
