"You're my favourite adult. You're not boring like my dad, he also smells. You don't smell"

“Well, at least I don’t smell, ey?” He chuckled softly.
“Glad you like me though, lad.”

@aspiehero LIKED FOR A STARTER
❛ Actually, your dad asked ME to w a t c h you whilst he’s out on a case; it’s a big one this time, very important, and they’ve almost got him. He promised me you’d be on your best behaviour, I know you will be. Won’t you ?? Just please don’t touch anything. ❜
@aspiehero ll Here
“You can keep it if you want, or borrow it until you find one of your own that you like more. I’m okay with you having it, though. And maybe you could see if your teachers would let you keep a racket ball or a stress ball with you in class? If they say you can’t, you can always ask me for a doctor’s note and I’ll ask them to let you keep it on you.”
He would find a way to make it happen, or anything else, if it helped Tom, but John didn’t think the boy would be denied something that helped him cope with his surroundings.
Too old?
John blinked at him a moment before laughing, shoulders shaking. “Well, I’m not that old thank you very much. But, um, he is the first real best friend I’ve ever had, and I’m his first best friend; we met late in life. You’re never too old for a best friend.”
He leaned forward slightly to rest his arms on his knees, grinning. “My Gran was ancient and she had a best friend.” The woman had several friends. Friday Game Nights were always interesting when you’re in a house full of old ladies...and it always ended with John having sore cheeks. “They met when they were in their fifties.”
With that said, John leaned back in his seat again, reminding himself to give the boy some space. When it came time to make contact again, maybe he could offer to let Tom move the bell and drum over his chest where John pointed so he could hear his heart and lungs. It’d keep Tom’s hands busy and keep them from touching more than they had to.
John tapped the stylus on the edge of the tablet a moment before forcing himself to stop and relax. “Now, for the reason you’re here. Do you want to talk about it and tell me what’s going on? Or we can sit quietly for a bit, there’s no hurry.”

John yelped and jumped back a step, leaning over and rubbing at his leg. He glanced back at the file and hummed quietly. Oh yeah, whoops.
Keeping his eyes low and away from the boy’s face, John pulled up a chair and gestured to it, “Would you like to sit here? It might be better than the examination table.” And he needed to remember how to approach the boy; it’s hard to treat a child. Sometimes. Each of them were different, even at Thomas’ age.
Never a dull moment.

“Is there something in my fur?”

“There should be a pile of blankets in the hall closet just there. Want to grab them while I move some things around?”

“It’s too early for this.”
“Hey, you’re bleeding!”
“Thank you. I know.”
