This is an answer he does not hesitate to give! Many millennia ago (to mortals, this would only be a decade at most), he had made MANY attempts at friendship with his peers. In the beginning, the endeavor had went well. Most children were perceptive to his little games and his imagination had enticed many friends! They were interested in the little boy who believed himself to be a demon and found his grandiose vocabulary to be amusing.
It became a different tale when those he thought of as comrades began to view him differently. The talk of demons, of hell, of beasts did not end and soon many came to realize that he was not playing. Or if he was, he seemed to be forever playing a game that only HE could follow. It was natural, was it not? To feel excluded? Soon enough, he lost what little friends he had and it was frightening...how painful it could be...
He retreated into himself. It was EASY to tell himself that he needed no one. This life that he led of isolation was fine for him and his ... mother and aunt were only happy to accommodate him. Perhaps they had even coddled him but they were frightened of pulling him out of his shell too soon. It had made him MISERABLE to do so. He wanted friends because who did not? But the effort to make them only to lose them all over again ...he was better off without.
Was it difficult then? To understand why Gundam had been so receptive yet so standoffish when Hinata appeared to be making friends with him? Yes! Hinata did interest him -- that could not be denied. It was refreshing to find someone who listened to what he had to say and to contribute to their little conversations in ways that showed that the listener was ...well! Listening! He was afraid that it was all for show. That Hinata meant none of it or was merely talking to Gundam to appease him, a forgotten god. Because clearly -- Hinata wanted something from him, yes? And once he had it, the god would be forgotten once again!
...and yet...that did not happen. Against all odds, they were friends and Gundam had tried to pull away but...Hinata would not let him. This time, the great Gundam Tanaka...will admit defeat.
