12 September 1917 - Letter to Edith from the Maple Leaf Club, London
Fred describes receiving his "railway warrant", which begins the telling of the first few days of leave spent in London. He made a visit to Hornchurch, where Frank had been stationed until two days after Fred's arrival in England, when the squadron had departed for France. The next day Fred collected some money at "the pay office" with plans to go to Scotland. However, he met up with an old friend and spent the day with him, followed by a visit to friends the Kinnaird-Roses who let him know that Frank was in an English hospital, missing a toe.
Fred then goes on to write to Edith the story of Frank's adventure against skilled airmen from what he believes to have been "The Circus". After the loss of his toe, Frank managed to escape to near their brother Arthur's hospital, and Arthur fixed him up before sending him back to London.
In describing an outing with the Kinnaird-Roses, Fred notes seeing Sir H. H. Asquith with his wife and some family in attendance at the play Inside the Lines, which was playing at the Apollo theatre with Eille Norwood. Fred then concludes his letter with lamentations over the time it will take for his Canadian mail to head to France and then make it back to him at his new location in England.
