Can Chara also get a pet rock?

ivoryspear asked:
“Asriel, it’s almost 3 in the morning. Why are you awake?”
‘it be like that sometimes’ was the first answer that popped into his mind, but that probably wasn’t the correct one. “bad dream,” he answers simply. that was normal, right? kids had bad dreams all the time. no cause for concern.
asriel hums softly, wrapping his hands around a thermos full of tea. it’s covered in various stickers and has a floral strap attached to it. “i stay up late a lot. it’s nice. don’t the stars remind you of waterfall? chara and i used to go there when we were young. they were right — these stars are so pretty, but… i can’t help but miss it sometimes.”
there was something about the nighttime, still vulnerable from lack of rest and the hollow feeling that his sleep left him with, that made him talkative. he takes a deep breath and casts her a smile, gently shaking the thermos. “want to join me? i have tea!”
It’s kind of Asriel not to return her question, Undyne thinks, although her answer is even less interesting; just a fit of insomnia. She likes to be outside when she’s stuck being awake, under the still-foreign endlessness of this sky.
Asriel is kind for his age, or at least better than she was (much better. It’s a low bar). Knowing even a sliver of the things he might have a ‘bad dream’ about makes her wiser than to ask.
“Yeah, I mean... you hear that same river your whole life, from almost anywhere in the Underground, and suddenly it’s not there,” she says instead. She hopes it’s a kinder answer than another question. “No wonder it’s hard to sleep.”
She sits down next to him, smiling at his offer of tea. The thermos is cute. She’s heard plenty about stars, in the Underground, though none of it compared to the real ones. It’s funny to think that, despite living lifetimes apart, she and Asriel might’ve heard a few of the same stories from the same people.
“I never thought I’d miss them. I thought, if we got out, I’d never want to go back.” It turns out that you’re less likely to consider homesickness when you’ve never been very far from home. “Now I miss those crystals on the ceiling as much as anything else.”
She leans back, facing up at the sky. “But, even if it’s not home, the real thing is pretty great! So I can’t say it’s all bad.” She takes a deep breath of the night air. “This doesn’t feel like a sight that’ll get old anytime soon.”
