Asriel didn’t look at her at first. His jaw was tight, eyes fixed on the horizon like he was watching something only he could see. The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face, casting deep shadows beneath his eyes.
“Okay?” he repeated, voice low, almost amused. “That’s a sweet word. Tidy. Human.” Finally, he turned, and when his gaze met hers, there was a flicker—something pained, something buried deep under centuries of blood and regret. But it vanished almost as fast as it appeared.
“I haven’t been ‘okay’ in a long time,” he said, softer now, almost like a confession. “But I’m alive. Or close enough to pass for it.” Then, with a dry smirk: “You learn to stop asking that question, eventually.”
