This was our MTGinktober for “Overgrown,” starring Isperia, part-time Supreme Judge and full-time Assassin’s Trophy! You always want to face a sympathetic judge, but--not to petrify you--I hear Isperia’s stone-cold these days. Of course, when you get a favorable ruling, I’m sure you’ll think she rocks. If I Assassin's Trophy a Leonin Arbiter, do they not get to search for a land unless they pay 2?
They’ll get to search no matter what.
When resolving a spell or ability, its instructions are followed in the order they’re printed. For Assassin’s Trophy, this means that first the permanent is destroyed and then its controller may search for a basic land. Since Leonin Arbiter is destroyed before the search happens, its effect no longer applies and can’t stop the search from happening.
