Assemble Workshop - Zine Publication

Today I started the zine workshop, we got a tour of the publication station and learned about the sustainability behind the risograph.

We then were tasked woth actually making our zine so that it can go through the risograph tomorrow.

It was really great to mix in some collage with drawings or varying simplicity. The layering also allowed me to add some depth to my work.

Assemble - A Retrospect

During the course of the past 10 weeks, the Assemble Project has allowed me to experiment with materials I usually wouldn't have the chance to use.

The different workshops forced me to think differently, and step out of my comfort zone.

However, as much of a learning experience this was, I am very glad that it's over. I think it's quite strenuous to work on a project without an end goal, but I did manage to get some finished pieces out.

Im pleased with my project, I think it looks quite uniform, a limited pallete greatly helping to achieve this. I do think that my original idea did get lost a bit, but I am content nonetheless.

Assemble - Painting Workshop

Using what I learned on Monday's workshop, I created a pair of paintings, "ROTTEN MEAT".

The first piece represents how when we die, we rot just like everything else, but unlike animals who are innocent, we are cruel and rotten inside.

While the second piece shows how our flesh is no different from the flesh of animals, which we consider 'meat'.

Assemble - Painting Workshop

I was first tasked to create a painting in black and white based off one of my previous posts. This was really enjoyable and unique for me.

We then did a bit of colour theory, and combined complentary colours to darken them. This was a bit repetitive and was sick of it by the end.

Lastly we had to recreate the same painting using 2 complementary colours, this wasn't going well for me so I never ended up finishing or keeping the piece.

Assemble - Skin Handbag

Using a picture frame as a mold I poured liquid latex over it in order to get a thin sheet of it. I then cut out a pattern of a simple bag after it cured.

I sculpted vertebrae and small ring beads out of clay to use for the handle. I then sewed the bag together and created the handle using medium wire.

Using acrylic paint and chalk pastels I added shading to the bag and bones.

Assemble - Print Making Workshop

Today I did a bunch of monoprints. I tried to keep them simple and not think too much about the drawings. The first few have an almost charcoal look to them which gives them a nice organic look.

These pieces were slight failures.

I forgot to remove the first layer of blue ink on the first piece, causijg the lines to come out blurred.

For the second piece, I wanted to imitate how cuts or scars look, but when I layered the blue and red ink, the blue ended up dominating instead of mixing.

Using what I learned from yesterday's workshop, I took photographs of my plaster pieces as well as a clay heart I made last week.

I focused on a lot of dark and red lighting to mimic the inside of our bodies, the use of red fabric also helped with this.

Camera and Lighting Workshop

This workshop was really enjoyable and interesting. Being able to explore lighting as well as different visual effects done through physical means instead of digital was very enlightening.

Some of the materials were difficult to use in order to create impressive effects, so it took a lot of shots to get a desired result, but it was definitely worth it each time.

It was very interesting to see how much lighting can affect the mood of an image, and I can't wait to explore it more within my project.
