ADAD1002 Assessment Task #1 - Concept Statement:
3. How does collaboration create communities in art and design? What challenges do collaborative approaches face and what are some of the solutions?
Collaboration in general can be viewed as ‘two-toned’ due to the sense of both negotiation and frustration being enforced when an individual is expected to participate in teamwork. Whilst this is not always the case, it is a basic summary of the means of which collaboration can be viewed as not all compromises from others can be respected nor trusted. Challenges faced among peers within group-work range from discussion of ideas to trusting fellow members with explaining said ideas, as not all thoughts will be praised upon when proceeding together. The notion of ‘singular ownership’ must be recycled to allow freedom of voice amongst participating members – a concept that is not so easily overcome. However, in extreme cases, perhaps due to lack of integrity or moral, ownership can be used to ‘encourage’ work ethics amongst collaborative peers as an attempt to persuade collectively. This however is mostly demonstrated within groups that are tormented by the idea of collaboration, hence a ‘toxic community’ is born due to members hesitation to communicate effectively.
Because I considered collaboration as a tangible subject, I decided to create a mini installation that would recreate this concept. Audiences could interact with the artwork to view the processes behind collaboration and its elements.
My concept of collaboration started with the idea of wind chimes and how symbolically they represented key elements of happiness and overall good-fortune. Because I was interested in displaying the pros and cons of collaborative approaches, the first thought was to rust the iron tubes of the ornaments to create a ‘worn-out’ style, representing the thoughts behind peers that despised cooperation. A separate, untouched, wind chime would be displayed in the middle to showcase the idea of collaboration as a positive element. I would then have strings of various tea bags attached to the wind chimes to demonstrate difference in opinion as not all the tea would be the same flavour. Some of these tea bags would appear burnt and some even untouched. However, the tea bags concept would be scratched and replaced with the idea of ‘puppeteering’ – the illusion of control (which would require a lot of string).
Ideally, collaboration is considered a positive approach in art and design practices however, challenges are always yet to occur to even the most perfect groups with the ideal communication, and that interests me more than the optimistic approach behind ‘effective teamwork’.
