Assessment Task 3 - ‘Perception’ Influences/Inspiration

Prior to this work transforming into something of a more analytical nature, I was heavily influenced by the cinematography of Roger Deakins and the pop art-esque photography work of Kate Ballis. This was still at the point where I was hoping to create a physical art piece rather than something conceptual and more academic. 

Lessons From The Screenplay is an online entertainment channel specialising on YouTube that explores previously unexplored concepts/ideas within filmmaking. Their many analytical pieces on various films influenced me greatly mostly from a presentation, visual and editing point of view. The way that the (muted) visuals are contrasted with the narration provides an easy-flowing narrative that’s both engaging AND educational. There are also visual animated segments used to prove a point in an easy-to-follow visual fashion, something that greatly influenced the sped-up drawing segments in my own video.

Michael Stevens (Vsauce) is an online personality/educator. He specialises in educational, academic, abstract and provocative content that constantly asks the audience confronting and provocative questions. His blending of humour, bizarre yet engaging visuals, and his scientific explanations to many a bizarre questions (’Is The Earth Actually Flat?’) is something to be admired. His upbeat and admittedly strange personality is what influenced me the most, as well as his mixture of great visuals and seamless transitions.

Assessment Task 3 - ‘Perception’ Final Statement

This final assessment went through the motions, to say the least. What started out as an artsy, photographic colour piece soon became a video essay-esque/analysis video on a CONCEPT surrounding ‘Perception’, rather than a world designed to question it or present it in a new fashion. This idea originated with the idea to bring memes, something extremely prevalent on online communities (social media etc.), into the real world to see if people’s perception of them would change when removed from a digital medium. However, I wasn’t sure how to implement this with my photography idea in a creative and entertaining fashion. I was soon inspired by certain video-essays that used a mixture of narration, comparative and relevant visuals and personal anecdotes to convey a point. I wanted to use my own personal experience regarding internet memes (in particular the ‘Prequel Memes’) and how it affected (and still continues to affect) my viewing experience of the early 2000′s Star Wars prequels and thus my overall perception of those films. This video essay could have vaguely taken on the shape of how [X] affects [X]’s perception of [X], but I decided to latch on to one example I thought would be interesting, fun, and at the very least relevant to the ‘perception’ topic. I also felt that this should be something of a provocative piece that engages the audience in a way that it forces them to question whether they’ve experienced something similar to that displayed in the video.

Assessment Task 3 - ‘Perception’ Experiment 4

At this time, I felt my colour route was a bit too ‘artsy’ and obvious. After discussing some ideas with my subject/friend Jackson, I came to an exciting conclusion - MEMES. Memes are an internet-based phenomenon that we young people are especially familiar with through social media and other forms of online entertainment. But how do I translate this into an artistic visual work? Well at this time I was still adamant about photography, so I got Jackson to pose as various popular meme templates and compare the two side by side. The aim here was to see if our perception of these memes and what they represent would translate in the ‘real world’. Much like colours, many current memes are designed to represent certain emotions and situations that we all deal with on our day-to-day lives. They are caricatures that MERELY represent these things, but I was curious as to whether people could identify the meme when placed into a realistic setting. Does it have the same meaning/impact? If you took captions from those original memes and put them over Jackson’s recreations, do they still retain that meaning? Again, it’s all up for the interpretation and very much depends on the audience’s familiarity with and perception of memes. This was an idea very much built around questioning the audience’s perception/interpretation of something as prevalent in our lives as memes.

Assessment Task 3 - ‘Perception’ Experiment 3 [P3]

I muted the colours much more in these darker images. This was to shape a much more ‘moody’ or ‘brooding’ perception/tone for both. The top is more mysterious, as it’s obvious that through the enhanced shadows and contrast that Jackson’s mood is dark and possibly bitter. The bottom is a bit more obvious, but I used a darker and more hate-fuelled red for this one, perhaps to emphasise a ‘rage’ building up within him. Again, this is all left up to the viewer’s perception of the image mixed with the colour and how they perhaps identify their own emotions with colours.

Assessment Task 3 - ‘Perception’ Experiment 3 [P2]

I applied a similar yet contrasting technique to the last experiment here. In these new photos of Jackson, I again used the yellow/golden tint in the top image to emphasise contempt, happiness and again, hopefulness. Yet instead of blue to signify sadness/depression, I used a far more contrasting, aggressive colour for the bottom image - red. I believe, like the blue, this colour could be a direct juxtaposition to his contempt and peaceful expression, but the red created doubt in this. What is he thinking about that’s making him so happy? Perhaps all is not as it seems. Are Jackson’s intentions well meaning or harmful? The red could signify a lustfulness or anger/rage about his demeanour, or just simply signifies his mindset as of that moment.

Assessment Task 3 - ‘Perception’ Experiment 3 [P1]

Similar to my previous experiment, I wanted colour to be my focus at this point of the brainstorming process. I decided to implement some of the ideas from experiment 2 on how particular colours and their placement within an image can evoke certain emotions. I decided to implement this practically through the artistic medium of photography. I used my friend Jackson as my test subject, capturing him after telling him to express certain emotions through his facial expressions. In the below image I told him to look happy or ‘hopeful’, and as if his expression wasn’t obvious enough, I added a golden tint later to enhance that effect. Later, however, I took that same image and replaced the gold tint with blue and enhanced the darks and shadows of the photo. Now instead of his happiness or hopefulness looking ‘natural’, it appeared as if he was putting on a facade to hide his true, darker and sadder emotions.
