Happy Mid Autumn / Mid Autumn Precipice depending on where you are!

I interrupt your regularly scheduled trying-to-post-chronologically-after-a-3-year-hiatus program (if anyone is counting) with one of my favourite chinese holidays, Mid Autumn Festival (!!!),  post directly from this year’s dumpster fire 2020. Here, I stretch the definition of ‘drinks’ into a solid by giving you some quick fire review on drink-flavoured confections, all gifts for this year’s Festival, unimpeded by the pandemic. It’s okay, we’ve wiped them down. Ironically, I will not be reviewing mooncakes, because I forgot and ate them. And I can’t eat another one. They are so, so thick. Maybe I’ll do one tomorrow. We have SNOW SKIN MOONCAKES. Very much not a drink, not even drink adjacent, but god are they lovely.

Bubble Tea Ice Cream Mochi (Top)

Mom: your photos look like poop

Tastes exactly like strong milk tea. Nice.

Grandma: the green tea one is best. But the chewiness of all of them is good. Not too doughy, not too chewy. 

Bubble Tea Cake

Hand model: grandma (pawpaw)

Pawpaw: chewy. Lumpy. 

Me: is it good? 

P: it’s okay. Not very unique.  

Me: but does it taste like what it’s supposed to? 

P: the lumpy texture is sort of like the pearls? 

Me: it soooort of tastes like tapioca, but also like some other Taiwanese sweet. If I didn’t know it was supposed to be bubble tea flavour, I wouldn’t have gotten that. Overall it’s kind of just like other Taiwanese cakes (We call these types 鳳梨酥, and it’s usually a pineapple cake).
