well honestly the prequels are pretty objectively horrible movies but at the same time they have a lot of good stuff that people (mostly men) seem to refuse to admitin fact if i had to guess, I’d say that gender plays more of a role in whether someone will admit the good elements of the prequels than age, because in my experience women are more likely to sympathise with anakin and find his fall to be a tragic story despite the weaknesses in lucas’s writing (oh boy the dialogue. the dialogue is.... really something. and oh, to live in an alternate reality where the first two movies set up all of the good stuff in 3 in a way that actually made sense instead of directly working against it) whereas men are more likely to call him a crybaby and write off the entire trilogy for being melodramaticas if... the originals.... aren’t melodramatic.............(AND HONESTLY like ok i watched them in the order 4 5 2 3 6 and i just have to say how the HECK did anyone take darth vader’s heel face turn in 6 seriously without the backstory showing that anakin NEVER WANTED THE DARK SIDE OR POWER FOR POWER’S SAKE HE JUST WANTED TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE HE LOVED AND DIDN’T REALISE HE WAS LOSING SIGHT OF THE BIGGER PICTURE there was NO foreshadowing before an hour and a half into return of the jedi when suddenly darth vader’s like ~~there’s no hope for me luke~~ like.... you’ve been killing thousands of people without a hint of remorse for two and a half movies dude i don’t think saving your son after allowing him to be tortured for half an hour first makes you a hero in and of itself)i just. i’m very tired of adult men (and boys my age too now that i think about it) actively insulting me when i tell them that revenge of the sith is my favorite of the seven. at the same time it’s super hilarious to say those words and watch the complex confusion pass through them as the image they have of me as an intelligent analyst of entertainment crumbles before their eyes as if “having good taste overall” and “enjoying an admittedly awful movie” are mutually exclusiveanyway. while one and two are pretty awful, three is marginally less awful, and altogether they contribute a lot of valuable backstory to the saga as long as you can take them with a heap of salt and just. enjoy them as part of the canon that we all love??? like why do you spend so much energy hating on something when you could spend that same energy or LESS on criticising them fondly, ripping them apart for their weaknesses, but ultimately accepting them as part of the story we know and love
