Types of steels used for manufacturing fasteners:
Alloy steels- it is steel that is alloyed with the nickel, molybdenum, and chromium and is considered best for those areas where strength is required. This type of steel has a good cold forming features and properties when it is annealed and is heat-treated for the combination of toughness, strength as well a shock resistance.
Carbon steel- fully-killed, fine grain basic steel that is available with no alloying agent. The low carbon steel has carbon content from 0.06 to 0.22% and often exhibit good ductility for the cold forming. However, the medium carbon steel contains 0.50% and is stronger but it is less ductile. This steel often responds well to temper and quench.
Leaded steels- when the lead is added to steel it improved machinability. The leaded steel is identified by the letter “L” in the SAE and AISI designation. Lead is the commonly added series of the screw machine steel and it allows lead as one of the alloying agents for a certain level.
Austenitic stainless steel- this type of steel is generally non-magnetic and has excellent corrosion resistance because of a large amount of chromium and nickel content. Their cold-forming characteristics are mainly subjected to the work hardening.
Martensitic stainless steel- this type of metals are chromium steels with some or no nickel content. This type of steel is magnetic and can easily be heat treated. They even have high strength and lower corrosion resistance and are harder.
Aluminum alloys- it is not steel but is mostly used for manufacturing fasteners. They have cold-forming features and can be used when there is a requirement for secondary machining.
