Do you know how many Oz books there are? Lyman Frank Baum wrote a total of 14 Oz books, though most of us are prolly most familiar with 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'. Majority of the author's books were illustrated by John Rea Neill, an American magazine and children's book illustrator. Here's one of his many pictures, in which I find the bottom right character (guessing it must be Oz) to remind me of some other anime character from either a Hayao Miyazaki or Satoshi Kon. I tried to recall which character it might be, but can't quite seem to pinpoint it. Dream vs Nightmare – the latter for me. I can't imagine a life without nightmares. Tonight, Swiss painter and, prince of Dark Romanticism, Henry Fuseli's 'The Nightmare', is the place I want to be. Came across a beautiful writing of this painting that was written by poet, Erasmus Darwin. "So on his Nightmare, through the evening fog, Flits the squab fiend o'er fen, and lake, and bog; Seeks some love-wilder'd maid with sleep oppress'd Alights, and grinning sits upon her breast — Such as of late, amid the murky sky, Was marked by Fuseli's poetic eye; Whose daring tints, with Shakespeare's happiest grace, Gave to the airy phantom form and place — Back o'er her pillow sinks her blushing head, Her snow-white limbs hang helpless from the bed; While with quick sighs and suffocative breath, Her interrupted heart-pulse swims in death." A Story A Saturday focuses on American Painter Andrew Wyeth's painting 'Christina’s World’ (Tempera on panel, 1948). Perhaps some of you are familiar with this artwork that is currently on display at @themuseumofmodernart ? Did you know the figure in the painting is based on the artist's friend/neighbor at his summer house in Maine? Anna Christina Olson suffered from polio, and on an occasion, was observed by Wyeth to be picking flowers from the fields. She later painstakingly dragged herself back the sloping terrain to get back to her house. The artist would later be inspired to paint this scene of Christina. It's interesting to note that the painting process began with the brown grass and worked its way towards the faraway buildings (In actuality, there was an entire neighborhood, but only a few were portrayed). Wyeth's wife posed for the twisted torso of this painting, and the only part that were true to Christina were those hands — stretched, clenched and tensed at the elbow.
