Gotta Be Perfect

Leonard was down right nervous, though he wouldn’t dare admit it. He had spent the last month or two trying to figure out exactly how he was going to do this, and even had a whole file in his PADD dedicated to figuring out exactly when and how he was going to do it. Hell he had even went as far as asking Uhura and Sulu for feedback. He wanted to make sure all of this was perfect, because Mika deserved perfect. 

So after managing to request some shore leave, he found a planet that was known for is spectacular beaches and managed to convince her to take some time off and go on a small vacation with him. He had made sure to get them a hotel room that had a spectacular view of the ocean. They had only been on the planet for a day and after a rather long day on the beach he had set up a hot bath, complete with bubbles and scented candles up for Mika so she could relax. 

The moment he was sure that she was in the water he got to work setting up everything he needed. With precision he went about pulling petals of the roses he had snuck up and went about spreading it on the bed in a fashion that it would make a rather large heart. Then in the middle of the heart using pink rose petals he went about spelling out ‘ Marry Me?’. With that done he went about setting up a few more candles and lighting them out going out of his way to set up a nice mood. 

Once he had the room set up to his liking, he quickly went about getting into a nice pair of black slacks and a dark blue button up shirt. He managed to fix his hair a bit with his fingers using one of the mirrors in the room. Once he was sure he looked decent enough he got his grandmother’s wedding ring, the very one that his mother wouldn’t let him have before for his first wife. However since Mika had his mother’s seal of approval he had managed to get the family heirloom. 

It wasn’t long after that before he heard the familiar sounds of her getting out of the bath, and he quickly got himself into position making sure to choose the side in front of the large glass windows, so the setting sun over the ocean was behind him. Leonard got down on one knee, with the ring in a little black box in his hand and waited for Mika.

“Unless Captain Lorca has specifically asked for something, I’m busy.” He’d been grumpier than usual, that day. He didn’t even turn to see who’d just walked in --- after all he was busy. Busy trying not to dwell on what he’d seen, what had happened, the day they rescued Lorca. Busy trying to think of how to pitch humans instead of tardigrades to Starfleet, all while still trying to make sure Hugh knew just how okay he was.

“I know my eyes are red but I can’t sleep now...”

Number One knew that voice. It was the widow of her former captain, of her friend. The man had died going to talk to One, so the former first officer blamed herself. She figured Mika may do the same. 

Moments after those hushed words were spoken to Doctor Boyce, Mika stepped into the room. The historian was the worse for wear. So much so that the usually unflappable Number One had to close her eyes to pull back her own emotions. 

Slowly, her eyes opened once more. “Greetings, Lieutenant.”

One herself had been injured, both legs had been crushed and were now under a boneknitter to fix the damage. With how bad they’d been even the boneknitter was taking its time. That meant One was stuck where she was for whatever Mika had to say.

it most certainly had not been leonard’s idea. he’d have been more than happy staying in the enterprise, docked in san francisco, and enjoyed the quietness of the halls as the crew took shore leave. but mika had wanted to go to the beach, and leonard had immediately said no, i’m not going to the beach, i hate the beach, no way.

as his toes sank into the sand and the sun began beating down on his back, leonard realized he was downright incapable of saying no to her. “ s’this the appeal ?? sunburn, subsequent skin cancer, and screamin’ kids everywhere ??”

          “if this is too personal, just tell me, but-- have you ever thought about having children?” a strange question, maybe, but it had been weighing on her mind for some time now. how could it not? there were certain biological truths that couldn’t be ignored, including the time frame for a safe and successful gestation. and...while she was firmly married to her job, hearing someone else’s thoughts on the subject would help.

With his face still pressed against the crook of her neck, he shook his head. Honestly, he had no reason for bothering her other than his desire for her company. “I just wanted to spend time with you.” A simple desire that he was trying to express more often in both words and actions since they seemed to please her more than simply indulging in one or the other. “What made you want to rearrange your bookshelf?”
