SAO Pride week 2021 Day 1: Introductory Post

Happy SAO Pride week!

I've been so occupied with IRL issues so my fic drafts will be left in dead folder again, but I still wanna do something for the week that my friend planned so hard for, so I decide to write a short introductory series of characters & relationships that are either confirmed as queer or can be interpreted as queer in the franchise.

Disclaimer: Besides the confirmed canon queer characters I only aim to give readers different view on why some of these wlw, mlm relationships are popular to a certain circle in this heavily heteronormative series, and where the interpretations come from. You can choose to ignore these posts if you don't believe in the fan shipping because surely the series do have easy gateways for you to believe in other heteronormative interpretations. At the end of day this is purely for fun.

SAO Pride Week 2021 Day 4: Asuna x Yuuki

While this is a non-canon ship, it still continues to get tributes from SAO media from time to time, and there is that one time author Kawahara Reki, who is also a huge yuri genre’s fan, mentioned Mother’s Rosario - the arc Yuuki & Asuna are featured in as the main focus - as the closest thing he wrote to a yuri story, said in an interview with yuri author of Bloom Into You anime/manga, you can read more on that interview here.

1. Light Novel excerpt: The scene where Yuuki proposed to Asuna in SAO volume 7 Chapter 10, which made Asuna thought of the same-sex marriage debate in Japanese media though no serious political proposals emerged yet (main point: Asuna considered the marriage with Yuuki!).

“Hey, Asuna…would you marry me?”

“Uh…”

“Oh, but you’ll have to be the bride and take my name. Otherwise I’d be Yuuki Yuuki!” she said, giggling, but Asuna panicked. It was true that Japan had followed America’s lead in engaging the same-sex-marriage debate—the topic arose in the media a few times a year—but no serious political proposals had emerged yet, as far as she knew.

Yuuki gleefully said, “Sorry, I’m just kidding. You already have a sweetheart of your own. It was him, right…? The one fiddling with the camera…”

“Er…uh…yes, that’s right…”

“You oughta be careful.”

“Oh…?”

“I have a feeling that he lives somewhere apart from reality, just not in the same way I do.”

“…”

Asuna tried to consider what Yuuki was saying, but her head was spinning too fast to make sense of it. She rubbed her heated cheeks and glanced over at the lens. Yuuki said kindly, “Thank you, Asuna. Really. I’m so happy to have seen my old house again. Even if the house disappears, the memories will be here. The happy memories of Mama, Papa, and Big Sis will always be here…”

On a side note, what Asuna mentioned is a reference to the on-and-off constant debate in Japan regarding accepting legalisation of same-sex marriage, but in reality some more legality fight has risen up in the last few years. From Wikipedia:

2. Anime adaptation: in SAO season 2 episode 23, it features Yuuki’s marriage proposal, but they changed Asuna’s reaction to implicitly denying the possibility of 2 girls getting married.

3. Game adaptations: They made a various tributed events for fans of Asuna & Yuuki relationship, some later events are more outright shippy than the previous one.

- Hollow Realization: There is study quest where Yuuki made a flower for Asuna with the help of Strea

- Integral Factor: There is a June Bride event where Asuna & Yuuki dressed up as a pair of bride & groom

- Alicization Rising Steel: There is an event where Yuuki challenged Kirito to a duel so she can going on a date with Asuna. Asuna said Yuuki didn’t have to do that to be able to get a date with her, while Kirito showed that he was already perfectly OK with it since the start. End of the event showed Asuna x Yuuki’s date.

- Memory Defrag: In an event Asuna & Yuuki got a special scout & special manga where Asuna & Yuuki wore school uniforms in ALO together, they bought pair rings and went on a little date.
