ASYAAF & Hidden Artist Fair July 2018
Knowing only two of us II by Oh Suji (2018)
ASYAAF and Hidden Artists 2018 is a special art fair that provides a special platform for young emerging artists showcased alongside works by established artists. You can expect to see everything from cute bunnies with intricate meanings, interactive media art and grotesque statues that have a magnetic pull, drawing you to look at all the contours of a satirical and aesthetic poo. The docents selling artworks at the sectioned booths along with the media team are university students from all sorts of majors, volunteering their skills to promote the arts.
As you walk through the pink and navy entrance the youthful energy is intoxicating as you can hear bubbling laughter in between the booths, unlike the cold white walls in traditional art fairs. Yet, when it comes to business, the little red stickers marking ‘sold’ are dotted around the exhibition. Marking its 10th anniversary, artists also sold smaller artworks at 100,000 won which were sold out in the first few hours. Serious and anonymous collectors (marked by their aggressive titters when filmed) filled the halls, with elusive corporate men picking up great deals for the hopeful artists. Throughout the days, many students and tourists flocked in to get some inspiration as well, drawing a diverse crowd ranging in age. It is a great opportunity to pop by and see what the young creators are doing in Seoul and challenge yourself to see if you can distinguish it from the ‘established’ hidden artists.
