Purple harlequin toad - Atelopus barbotini

Here we have another gorgeous toad, that, unfortunately, I can find very little information on, but still gorgeous ! The colour combination of the purple and the green eyes reminds me of the penguin and the riddler from DC, which I think is awesome !

Description

Atelopus barbotini are a smaller species of toad only reaching approximately 2.5 centimetres for males and 3.5 centimetres for females as adults.

Distribution

It is endemic to the uplands of central French Guiana.

Decline in population

Deforestation and disease are the main causes for population decline in recent years. Because French Guiana has few laws and restrictions for logging, there are often issues with sustaining enough range for the toads to maintain a steady population.

Not a dart, not a frog... a toad!

Really excited with how this version has turned out. Its about 90% complete. Hopefully I can get a good photo and get it scanned in for prints soon.

Done in gouache and pastel pencils on pastelmat.
