As Rachel finishes a 23cm Mini Globe we shall continue on with#GlobeFacts .. looking at the pirates who once called the island of Nosy Boraha home.. There was the fearsome Cornish pirate Robert Culliford, who was tracked down by Captain Kidd on Nosy Boraha while the Scot was still hunting pirates. While plotting to capture Culliford's ship most of Kidd's crew, who had grown angry with their captain, abandoned him signed on with Culliford. Culliford and his new crew then set off in late June, 1698 leaving Kidd and his ransacked ship behind.. A 30-metre long tunnel complex on the Island of Pirates was also discovered ... it is thought that it may have been carved by the buccaneers to store treasure or to be used as an elaborate trap. Back to Kidd. It was believed the infamous pirate buried his stash somewhere on his travels and tried to barter his knowledge of its location in return for his life after being arrested for piracy and murder. Kidd's plan failed and he was sentenced to hang in 1701, his decaying body dipped in tar then strung up in chains and left to rot in public view beside the River Thames to deter other would-be pirates. The buccaneer operated across the world, from the Atlantic to the Far East, as well as in the Indian Ocean and searches for his treasure have been carried out in locations ranging from the East Coast of America and the Caribbean to the South China Sea. On 7 May 2015, a large 55 kg (121 lb) silver ingot, which was believed to be Captain Kidd's treasure, was found off the coast of the island. However, after further analysis, Unesco, a branch of the United Nations, determined that the large piece of silver believed to be Captain Kidd's was actually 95% lead, and believed the piece to be a broken part of the Sainte-Marie port constructions.
The search for treasure continues..... Click to read earlier #PirateFacts & #MadagascarFacts More globes : www.bellerbyandco.com

#GlobeFacts! Moving clockwise through South America... we get to Pará. A state of northern Brazil through which the lower Amazon River flows to the sea. It is bounded to the north by Guyana, Suriname, and the Brazilian state of Amapá, to the northeast by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by Amazonas. It is the second largest state in Brazil. The capital and chief city is Belém. Belém was founded by the Portuguese in 1615, mainly to keep other European nations from settling there. Spanish Jesuit missions were the first settlements upstream, they were expelled by the Portuguese in 1710. The state is crossed by the Equator, and the climate is equatorial. The average annual temperature is 78 °F (26 °C), with a range between the coldest and warmest months of between 2 and 3 °F - 1.1 and 1.7 °C... meaning it's basically the same all year around. Except for a few patches of savanna, most of the state is covered with dense tropical rainforest, or selva, with thousands of species of broad-leaved evergreen trees. Ethnically, the population is composed of people of European, Indian, and mixed European and Indian ancestry, as well as Afro-Brazilians, who have come to constitute a decided majority. The third largest ethnic Japanese community in Brazil is located in Pará, with about 13,000 inhabitants, surpassed only by settlements in the states of São Paulo and Paraná. On the second Sunday in October, Pará celebrates the largest religious event in Brazil: the procession of the Círio of Nazaré. The tradition started when a farmer and lumberman called Plácido José de Souza found an image of the Virgin and Child on the edge of the Murucutu creek. After taking it home, the image would mysteriously go back to the place where it was initially (he tried many times..). So Plácido decided to build a small chapel on the edge of the creek. This episode was regarded as miraculous throughout the region... & still attracts thousands annually. Photo 📷 thanks to Andrew Meredith @andrewmeredithphoto | www.bellerbyandco.com
