Free Third Thursday evening art tour scheduled for March 19

ATHENS, Ga. – The next Third Thursday­ – the monthly evening art tour of seven public art galleries – is scheduled for Thursday, March 19 from 6-9 p.m.

Third Thursday was established in 2012 to encourage attendance at Athens’ established art venues through cooperation and co-promotion by the organizing entities.

The March 19 tour will include the following exhibits/galleries at these stops:

·      Lyndon House Arts Center –An opening reception from 6–8 p.m. featuring drawings by Katherine Dunlap will be the main event. This is the first opening for a new exhibition program, the Lounge Gallery — a swanky space with windows overlooking a view of north Athens that will feature quarterly solo exhibitions by emerging artists. Additionally, the "40th Juried Exhibition” is open to the public highlighting original artwork created by local artists, judged by Carter Foster, Curator of Drawing at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York. Also showing is “Forty of Something”, showcasing varied collections from the community, each consisting of 40 items, to commemorate the center’s 40th year of bringing art to downtown Athens. This month’s collection is Lauren Fancher’s Forty Found Photographs.

·      Ciné – An exhibit of paintings by local artist Sarah Lowing. Lowing has shown her work at galleries and alternative spaces including a solo show at 1294 Sunset Gallery, and group shows at Tinlark Gallery, Ruth Bachofner Gallery, and Post Gallery in Los Angeles and the Green Gallery in Milwaukee. 

·      Hotel Indigo – “Ornament” includes artists interested in adornment and display. “BANG,” a new installation by Carol John is ready for viewing at the GlassCube at Hotel Indigo.

·      The Classic Center – “Nature Revealed” features five artists, all looking at the natural environment through the eye of an artistic microscope. “Then and Now: Celebrating 40 years of the Lyndon House Arts Center” represents five artists, Munroe d’ Antignac, John d’Azzo, Terri Jarrett, Leah Mantini and Erik Patten, their award winning artworks from previous Lyndon House Annual Juried Exhibits, as well as a selection of their current works.

 ·      Georgia Museum of Art – “Small Truths: Pierre Daura’s Life and Vision” – The Pierre Daura Center was established at the Georgia Museum of Art in 2002 and contains a collection of paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures by the Catalan-American artist Pierre Daura. “Pierre Daura (1896–1976): Picturing Attachments” – This exhibition is the first one devoted to the many works that Pierre Daura created throughout his career in response to his personal relationships. “Chaos and Metamorphosis: The Art of Piero Lerda” – This exhibition presents a cross-section of the work of Italian artist Piero Lerda (1927–2007). “Terra Verte” – Scottish artist Patricia Leighton has been making art in the public realm for more than 25 years, creating large-scale permanent commissions that relate to the history of a given site and relevant environmental and ecological conditions.

·      ATHICA – ATHICA is closed for this Third Thursday but will open “TEASE: Hair as Muse + Material,”  on March 28.

·      Lamar Dodd School of Art – “Lamar Dodd Professorial Chair Project Space: Zoe Strauss” – The 2014-2015 Lamar Dodd Professorial Chair, Zoe Strauss, presents an in-flux project space that will include a variety of exhibitions and events featuring the work of Strauss, Dodd graduate students and Dodd faculty. “Square One: First Year MFA Student Exhibition” – This exhibit brings together work from the first year MFA students at the UGA Lamar Dodd School of Art. Also on exhibit will be the “Annual Student Juried Scientific Illustration Show,” “Annual Juried Student Printmaking Exhibition” and “Keith Wilson: The Dodd.

The Third Thursday shuttle, which is sponsored by The Classic Center Cultural Foundation, will circulate through all of the art venues every 30 minutes, beginning at the Lyndon House at 6 p.m. Free parking is available at the Lyndon House Arts Center, the Georgia Museum of Art, the Lamar Dodd School of Art and ATHICA.

All exhibits are free and open to the public during Third Thursday.
