Mushroom Risotto

Sitting in the back of the clinic, Atieno sat at his desk filling out paperwork from the day. A small breeze was coming through the window, Atieno looked up and out the window to see the sun setting. He sighed, and then heard a small giggle behind him. All of a sudden, arms were flung over his shoulders, and a kiss landing on his cheek. “What are you so happy about?” Atieno whispered to her, turning his head to give her a kiss on the cheek as well.

A smile came upon Cassandra’s face, releasing her arms from around him, and pushed her hair behind her ear. “Nothing.” She giggled. “I’m just happy to see you back at it again after your last…. Incident.” She sat beside him, resting her head on his shoulder, watching him fill out the paperwork. “Doesn’t it feel good to be back at work after so long?”

Atieno sighed and kept writing in the file, ignoring her question. ‘Broken arm; put in cast and given pain killers’ he scribbled, before shutting the file and putting it on the pile. Looking to his shoulder, he saw her resting on his shoulder, and he let out a soft sigh. “I know it’s been a long day, but isn’t there some things you need to do up front before we can call it a night?” He asked her, resting his head on top of hers. He shut his eyes, and smiled; he felt like he could sit here forever and be at peace with her by his side.

The candle on the desk flickered with a larger breeze that came through the window. He lifted his head and leaned over the desk, closing the window. “Go on, get to work, Cassy.” He said with a smile on his face. “The faster we get done here, the faster we can eat dinner and relax for the evening.” He watched her stand up and slowly shuffle away.

She stopped midway to the door, and turned around, an exaggerated frown on her face. “I don’t want to, but only because I know you’re in charge of making dinner tonight!” A smile overcame her face instantly, and she ran out the door, shutting it behind her.

Atieno exhaled through his nose, his smile disappearing for a brief moment, but not for long. He let out a laugh, and sat back down at his desk, continuing the endless pile of paperwork. He hummed to himself, pondering about what to make for dinner now that it was pushed onto him. “I think tonight… calls for mushroom risotto.”
