Accommodating VSS in day-to-day existence
Just some tips I’ve compiled from surviving existence as a de-tuned television.
Use many different light sources, preferably adjustable ones, so you avoid casting shadows. A lot of rooms will have ceiling lamps in the centre of the room so adding lighting to the perimeter is important.
Similarly, make sure to have a range of possible light levels so you can adjust to compensate for what you need. This can be done with dimmable lights but a lot of people find the flicker of dimmed LEDs makes symptoms worse so multiple smaller lights can often be a better option.
Choose your main light to meet your needs as best you can both in colour and brightness. I personally need my space quite bright and lit very neutrally but some people need their space dimmer and might choose warm or cool tones. This is very individual.
Have light switches near your bed or remote-controlled so you can turn them off without having to walk in the dark.
Use light mode on your devices if you have to. People might laugh at you but, for me at least, the static interferes with the dark mode’s light text and makes it quite hard to read.
Get your eyes checked and your prescription updated often. It fucking sucks because insurance doesn’t cover it as often as we need but even a quarter point change in prescription is easily enough to make me struggle to read road signs.
Clean your glasses often. Contacts can help with this but some people find the dryness makes the static worse.
Carry binoculars and don’t be afraid to use them in unconventional situations. Yes it’s weird, that doesn’t mean it’s not helpful.
Sweep your floors and clean your surfaces on a schedule or at least keep a log you can check. I can’t tell a surface is dirty until I feel it or get really close to it or feel it.
