Atlantic Spadefish: The scientific name is derived from the Greek word "chaíti" meaning "mane" and "dipteros" meaning "with two fins." The Spadefish is also known by numerous other names, including angelfish, white angelfish, threetailed porgy, ocean cobbler, and moonfish. It is the symbol of the North Carolina Aquariums.

Atlantic Spadefish

The Atlantic spadefish reaches a maximum total length of 35.8 inches (91.0 cm) and a maximum reported weight of 19.8 pounds (9 kg). Both sexes are mature at approximately one year of age.

I drew a sand tiger shark and some spadefish when I was at the beach recently! Hadn’t buckled down and done this much detail in a while.

The Atlantic spadefish (Chaetodipterus faber) is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Ephippidae, which includes spadefish and batfish. The species is endemic to the western Atlantic Ocean. They are found off the coast of the southeastern United States as far north as Massachusetts, the Gulf of Mexico, and in the Caribbean. They are also found in Bermuda and the eastern coast of Brazil.They inhabit marine and brackish waters typically in subtropical climates and are common in shallow waters along coastlines.

Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary has fish in spades – spadefish, that is! 

Divers visiting this sanctuary off the coast of Georgia are often surrounded by schooling fish like these.

Atlantic Spadefish will congregate around a variety of environmental super-structures - including reef systems, sunken vessels and oil derricks. They congregate in large schools - consisting of up to 500 individuals.

The big fish in the middle are Atlantic spadefish. While they are not common at your local fish market, I have heard that they taste pretty good if properly prepared and put up a great fight as a sportfish.
