Gisteren in #Artis zagen we deze rups van de #atlasvlinder. Hij is een cocon aan het spinnen. Door de draadjes heen zie je zijn kop nog heen en weer bewegen. (bij Artis)

The Atlas Moth (Attacus atlas) is a large moth found in the tropical and subtropical forests of southeast Asia (area between southern China, India, Malay archipelago and Indonesia). A moth is closely related to the butterfly. The Atlas Moth is also known as the Snake-Head Moth because the tips of its wings are shaped and marked to imitate a real snake’s head, complete with eye, to scare off predators. The Atlas Moth has a wingspan of 25-30 cm and the largest wings of all moths covering about 400 cm².
