‘ what are you staring at? ’
Isabella blinked, and was brought back to herself by the sound of a stranger’s voice. She realised she’d been staring vacantly at the teenage boy who’d spoken, for goodness knew how long, daydreaming about the living room of the farmhouse. The dark red couch, perfect for curling up and reading on, and the well-thumbed secondhand books on the shelves. Normally she hated damaged books -- they upset her -- but these books had clearly been loved by their previous readers, and they gave the room a homely feeling.
“Oh my, I’m sorry,” she said quickly. “I didn’t mean to stare. I was miles away.” She managed a smile, though she felt embarrassed, but not just for staring. She felt as if she’d been caught out thinking of something incredibly private and intimate.
